BLACKBALL NOTES

At Roa, on Saturday night, a farewell social and dance were tendered to Mrs W. Mason and Miss Alma Mason, on the eve of their departure from Roa to New Brighton. It was largely attended by their numerous friends of the Roa and Blackball district. The following items Y er tributed Tap dance, Mr J. O Donnell; song, -Mr J. Clarke, Ole Faith tnr’- W Heyward, song, ‘Moonlight Boses '; songSlr A. Moore, -The Bird in a Gilded Cage’ ; song, M ’ss Jess Howden, “Invitation to a Dance. Mrs W. Mason was attired in a becoming gown of brown figured marocain and Miss Mason wore a charming blue gown of elephant crepe. In making the presentation of a silver tea service to Mrs Mason and a xylonite toilet set to Miss Mason, Mr J. O’Donnell paid a tribute to the good fellowship of both ladies and of the high esteem in which they are held by their many friends. He hoped that the present would help to remind them of the friends they were leaving, and that their new home would afford them the greatest happiness and prosperity. After the singing of “For They are Jolly Good Fellows,” Mrs Mason .thanked .Mr O’Donnell for .his -kind wishes and her many friends for their beautiful gift, -and hoped that, when visiting Christchurch they would remember that her home was at New Brighton. Miss Mason also returned thanks for their kind wishes and the lovely present they had given her. The friends of Miss Dorothy Mason held a surprise party at the residence of her parents, Mr and Mrs A. Mason, South Town Belt, in honour of her approaching marriage to Mr Norman Smith. The guest of the evening received many useful kitchen utensils, and Mr N. Smith. on behalf of his future wife, thanked those present for their gifts. Games, dancing and community singing were indulged in. Songs were contributed by Mrs Beale and Mr Norman Smith; humorous monologue, “Horsie Keep Your Tail Up,” Mr I’. James; Highland Fling, Miss C. Brown. Among those present were:—Mesdames A. Mason, E. Chilton, N. Smith, P. James, J. Pratt, A. Moore, McCallum, Balderstone, Frickleton, Day; Misses D. Mason, M. Shields, K. Day, M. Allen, E. Day, N. Pascoe, B. Goodall, C. Brown, M. Anderson, H. Phimister, M. Day; Messrs A. Mason, F. Smith, p. James, J. Pratt, A. Moore, W. Hayes, W. Goodall and G. James.
Owing to the state of the bar, the Blackball mine was idle all last week, but recommenced operations this morning, and a full week is expected. Roa and Blackball Creek mines continue to work full time. Mr T. Anderson will leave on Thursday for Auckland, where he has received' employment. Mr and Mrs Bloxham, senr., of Christchurch, are the guests of their son, Mr E. Bloxham, Stafford Street.
Miss Dorothy Burt, who recently underwent an operation for goitre, is progressing favourably. Mrs R. Neilson, Christchurch, is the guest of her parents, Mr and Mrs C. Hogg, Clifford Street. Mr E. Dumpleton, sent., is on a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mrs H. J. Campbell and Miss J. Fitzgerald left yesterday for Christchurch. Mr H. McLuskie is an inmate of the Christchurch Hospital. Mrs E. Bloxham, Stafford Street, is an inmate of the Grey River Hospital.
Mr and Mrs J. Kidd and Mr V. Davies left on Saturday for Christchurch.
Miss Alwyn Davies, Brodie Street, is an inmate of the Grey Hospital, suffering from pneumonia. Mr H. Hogg, of the local Post Office staff, has been transferred to Greymouth, where he commenced duties yesterday. Mr Guy Walker has been appointed to the vacancy. Mr H. Davies returned on Saturday from a visit to Wellington.
