ALLEGED SWEEP-WINNER
POLICE COURT CHARGE

DUNEDIN, August 11
Ernest Arthur Tremere Johnstone, 22, whose name resounded’ through New Zealand recently as the winner of £30,000 in the Irish Sweep, which report was subsequently shown to be unsubstantiated, appeared in the Police Court this morning, charged with being idle and disorderly, having insufficient lawful means of support. The police asked for a remand, stating an inquiry was necessary as to matters of breaking, entering and other offences. Accused had been at a. loose end since the “sweep” announcement and had only one penny when arrested. Senior-Sergeant Packer added: Johnstone has been at Timaru lately. There are certain inquiries to be made there. I’m not altogether sure he’s mentally sound. A remand was granted.
