CANCER MORTALITY
INCREASE IN AUSTRALIA [by CABLE —PEESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] CANBERRA, April 17. At the official opening of the fifth annual Cancer Conference, Mr. James Guy, Acting-Minister of Health, declared that in the past five years 11,500 cases of cancer had been treated with radium. Of 3,071 cases of operable cancer treated with radium in the same period, he said, 62 per cent, were known to be free of the symptoms, while only four per cent, were known to have died. However, despite a vigorous campaign against cancer, the mortality rate had increased considerably until I one in every 7.3 deaths last year were attributed to this disease. The Commonwealth Government, in the past 0 seven years, had spent £753,000 -on cancer control. Several New Zealand delegates are attending the conference.
