FRENCHMAN RESCUED. [by CABLE —PEEKS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] (Received April 18, Noon). LONDON, April 17. The Jervis Bay’s 600 passengers had an unexpected thrill, witnessing the rescue of a French airman, whose plane sapk eight miles north of Bizerta. ’ Three planes were flying in formation near the liner, when one fell. The Jervis Bay stopped and lowered a boat, which, after half an hour’s search, found the pilot, Charles Petus, clinging to a piece of wreckage. He was later returned by a French seaplane, after his squadron at Sedhamed had been informed by wireless. CENTENARY RACE. WELLINGTON, April 17. Hopes that the money required to enable him to compete in the MacRobertson Centenary air race, as a representative of New Zealand, would bo forthcoming, are entertained by Squadron-Leader- J. D. Hewett. Hewett, who arrived from Auckland to-day, admitted this evenig that he was ‘‘very keen on entering the race.” He said he had been approached by an Auckland syndicate, and asked to nominate his own team. He was to have met the members to-day, but had had to fly a passenger to Wellington. COMMERCIAL DROME WELLTNGOTN, April 17. The initial steps were taken, to-day at the first meeting of the Wellington Air Port Enquiry Committee, set up recently to invite co-operation of the Government, aviation and local body I engineering experts, in determining what is the best site for a future aetoI drome for commercial purposes.
