To-day’s Racing News

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME. April 19, 21.—Whangarei. April 21. —Marton. April 21.—South Canterbury. April 21, 23. —Nelson. April 27, 28.—Pahiatua. April 27, 28.— Marlborough. April 28. —Amberley. May 2, 3. —Egmont. May 10, 12.—Wanganui. May 11, 12. —Southland. May 19. —Rangitikei. May 26.—South Canterbury. June 2, 4. —Otaki Maori. June 2,4, 5, —Dunedin. Improving: Hushing is now staying on better than formerly, and as she can handle any going it should not be difficult to find races to suit her during the balance of the season. To Race Over Hurdles: Anemometer is to be tried over hurdles immediately, and as she id the right stamp of a jumper might prove more profitable in this department than she has done on the flat (says a Hawke’s Bay writer). Sylvan Dell is another that in all probability will be tried as a jumper. White Doe Injured: It is reported that White Doe received injury to a leg while being taken in a motor float to Nelson yesterday. The mare put one leg through the floor of the float, and it was not noticed for some time. Likely to Make Good: Kinross (Psychology—Valley Rose), who last winter gave fair promise as a hurdler during the few weeks he was in work, has now joined up with J. Jones’ team at Hastings, and in all probability will be tried as a ’chaser when next raced. As he is a natural fencer he should be of use in this department. Progress of Luna Lux: Luna Lux is giving every satisfaction* in his winter preparation and standing up to his work in great style. He was not raced at Hastings because his owner-trainer, Mr. G. D. Beatson, considered the going a little on the hard side for one carrying superfluous condition, and did not care to run any unnecessary risk. Dislikes Hard Going:

Owing to the hard state of the ground Solomon did not fulfil his engagements at Avondale meeting, though there is nothing amiss with the Chief Ruler gelding. He is in regular work at headquarters and will be ready to race as soon as required. This three-year-old has not done as well as expected during the present season, mainly due to track condtions being against him. Hurdler Doing Well: Since his success in the Brighton Hurdles last month Thespis has not been overtaxed, but J. Burgess has the brown gelding looking very bright and healthy. This horse is likely to be a tough proposition in hurdle races during the winter season, despite the fact that he is sure to be meeting stronger and better seasoned fields than he encountered at Ellerslie.

Put Up Good Performance: In her only start at Avondale Imamint ran a sterling race to finish within a head of Puss Moth in the Mt. Eden Handicap. She had not done much fast work before the meeting, owing to the injury she received through being kicked by another horse while at the post in the Easter Handicap. In the circumstances her performance was a real good one, and her owner should have a good innings with the daughter of Catmint during the next few months..

Aurora Borealis to Return: The inclusion of Aurora Borealis in the list of nominations for the Marton Steeplechase came as a surprise. She is nine years old, so she is not yet in the veteran stage, judged on steeplechase standards, but it looked as if her racing career* was at an end when she broke down badly nearly three years ago. She was retired to the stud, and her Lackham filly is about eighteen months old. Her racing record overcountry was short, but brilliant.

How Cliathani was Named: Asked 1 how he came to give Chatham his name, Mr. Blair said: “Now, if there are no politicians listening, I will say that, being by Windbag, 1 named him after William -Pitt, an early Prime Minister of England, who afterwards became the Earl of Chatham. But if any politician is within hearsay I will say that I named him after the dam, Myosotis—the flower forget-me-not, a native of the Chatham Islands.” In reference to the above, it may be said that Lord Chatham was recognised as the finest orator of his day, and his speech on the American War, ranks as a gem of eloquence.

Sale of Thoroughbreds: There was a fair amount of interest shown in an auction sale of some of Mr. W. R. Kemball’s thoroughbred stock conducted on the breeder’s stud' farm at Masterton, on Friday last. Top price was 100 guineas, paid by Mr. C. Pilcher, of Feilding, for Windward, a three-year-old bay gelding in training. Snowball, a three-year-old black Hy, in training, was disposed of for 33 guineas, to Mr. E. W. BarnesWaipukurau, and Yvette, a three-year-old chestnut filly, was sold to Mr W. R- Cooper, Gladstone, for 16 guineas. Mr. George Taylor, “Craigielea,” Masterton, purchased Ma Cheri, a three-year-old bay filly in training, for 24 guineas. Mr. J. Tocker, Featherston, bought Anita May, another three-year-old bay filly, the price paid being 14 guineas. Paraki, • a thirteen-year-old mare, was disposed of to Mrs O. H. Beetham, “Morland,” Masterton, for 25 guineas. Mrs A M. Rutherford, Alfredton, purchased Arizona, a seventeen-year-old brown mare, and Missgold, a sixteen-year-old bay mare, paying 30 guineas and 42J guineas respectively. Miss Maid, a seventeen-year-old brown mare was sold to Mr. J. Judd, Solway, Masterton, for 17 guineas. Helen Winkie, a thirteen-year-old chestnut mare, offered on account of Mr. J. 0. Coe, Dannevirke, was purchased by Mr. Frank Price, Solway, for 60 guineas. Of Mr. Kemball’s offering, My Ideal, three-year-old bay filly in training, • Vivette, four-year-old bay filly, and Melfing Moment, sixteen-year-old bay fnare, were passed. Oread, a fifteen-year-old brown mare, offered on account of Mr. E. E. Preston, jun., Masterton, was also passed.

Trotting MEETINGS TO COME. April 21.—Te Aroha. April 21. —Kaikoura. April 26. —Marlborough. April 28. —Auckland. May 3, 5. —Forbury Park. May 5. —Cambridge. May 12. —Oamaru. May 12, 14.—Waikato. June 2, 4. —Canterbury Park. June 2, 4. —Hawke’s Bay. June 9. —Ashburton. June 12.—Waikato. June 14. —Rotorua. June 20, 23.—Auckland. WORTHY QUEEN’S TIME. It was stated yesterday that Worthy Queen, in her record-breaking attempt on the New Zealand record for trotters, held by Todd Lonzia, of 2min 9secs., went 2.2 3-5, but the actual time taken was 2.3 3-5, the incorrect time being telegraphed. TWO ATTEMPTS. Worthy Queen made two attempts on the record. On the first essay she broke at the end of a furlong. She was brought back and trotted the full mile in fine style, giving a magnificent display. Worthy Queen was paced by Olax (galloping), driven by F. Holmes. Biddy Parrish, driven by W. J. Tomkinson, and paced by Advance Camp, trotted a mile in 2min 8 3-ssec. This time is two-fifthsc of a second inside the record of 2niin 9sec., held by Todd Lonzia, but that figure had, of course, been shattered previously by Worthy Queen. ______________
