In the Magistrate’s Court, James Robert Mcllraith, agent, 28, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, in all, on five charges of failing to account for moneys collected on behalf of business firms, the amount involved being £74 2/6. The police said that accused, who pleaded guilty, established a collecting- agency, subscribers paying an annual subscription. Subscribers lately had experienced difficulty in obtainingstatements from accused, who had finally filed his petition in bankruptcy. UNEMPLOYED RELIEF. WELLINGTON, April 18. An unqualified denial was given today by Mr Jessep, Deputy Chairman of the Unemployment Board, to the telegraphed statement from Ashburton that the Board penalised allocations of centres which made efforts to raise funds locally to assist the unemployed. A reporter was shown the official notes of the proceedings at the meeting last month between a delegation from the Municipal Conference and the Government. The notes record that a denial was given at that time by the Deputy Chairman of the Board, who was present.

In reiterating the denial, Mr Jessep pointed out that the Ashburton Mayor was present at the meeting referred to. Mr Jessep said that he hoped in fairness to the unemployed, other municipalities would note the unfounded nature of the Ashburton statement and not on account of that statement abandon any measures during the coming winter' for distress relief.
