AUSTRALIAN WAGES

COURT’S NEW SCALE. [BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] MELBOURNE, April 17. Chief Judge Dethridge and Judge Drake Brockman, of the Federal Arbitration Court, have issued a majority decision on the unions’ application for the recission of the ten per cent emergency cut. The cut is abolished by the Court. New basic rates are to operate as from May 1, as follow: — In State metropolitan areas: Sydney £3/7/- per week, a rise of 7d; Melbourne, £3/4/-, a rise of 8d; Brisbane £3/1/-, a rise of 1/8; Adelaide £3/4/-, a rise of 3/11; Perth £3/6/-, a rise of 6/9; Hobart £3/7/-, a rise of 2/8.

The judgment affects about 600,000 employees. The basic wage outside of the metropolitan areas is three shillings less than in the respective capitals, except at Newcastle, which is to be the same as Sydney, and at Geelong, where the rate is £3/3/-.

Special provisions are inserted in the judgment to cover certain State services.

Judge Beeby issued a separate judgment, in which he said he thought that tie basic rate should be related to production, rather than to the cost of living, and that the awards should have been more substantial. Judge Beeby suggests rates as follow: Sydney 69/-, Melbourne 65/6, Adelaide 63/-, Brisbane 65/-, Perth 65/-, Hobart 66/-.
