Inspector C. W. Lopdell returned yesterday, from Hamilton.

Mr. and Mrs. P. McKenzie left, yesterday, on return to Wellington, after a holiday visit to Greymouth.

A London cablegram announced that the cricketer, Arthur Gilligan, was married to Catherine Margaret Fox, of Ilkey?

Mrs W. Thomas will leave shortly for London, where she will visit her sister, Mrs Oxenbine (Miss Ida Kilgour), a former resident of Greymouth, who is seriously ill.

A cablegram from Washington stated that President Roosevelt plans to sail on June 23 on a cruise to the West Indies, Panama and Hawaii, in a cruiser, with a destroyer escort.

Mr Reg. Cressey, of the G.P.O. Wellington, returned by yesterday’s express, after spending his annual leave with his mother, Mrs E. Cressey, Lord Street.

Archdeacon York, who has been in charge of Holy Trinity Church, during the absence from Greymouth of Archdeacon Jermyn, will return to Christchurch to-morrow.

Mr J. Connor, whose marriage to Miss Alice Doogan, of Greymouth, will take place at St. Patrick’s Church on Monday next, arrived, yesterday, from Omapere, Hawke’s Bay.

Passengers by yesterday’s express from Christchurch included: —Mr. and Mrs. J. Kidd, Mr. R. Hill, Mr. C. Heaphy, Mr. and Mrs. R. Poschich, Mr. A. Tilleyshort.

Inspector D. C. Fraser, who has been transferred on promotion as Superintendent to .Dunedin, was farewelled by members of the Hamilton police force, last evening, on the eve of his departure for the south. —Press Assn.

A cablegram from Melbourne reported the death of Mr Andrew Spence Chirnside, aged 81 years. Deceased was one of the. founders of the Victorian Amateur Turf Club. His horses won the Melbourne Cup. and two Caulfield Cups.

A vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Dr. J. W. Mcßrearty was passed at the annual meeting of the Greymoqth Returned Soldiers’ Association, last evening, on the motion of the Chairman, Mr. A. H. McKane.

The wedding took place at Holy Trinity Church, Avonside, Christchurch, yesterday afternoon, of Nola Phyllis, third daughter of Mr and Mrs R. S. Ward, of Christchurch, to William Charles, fourth son of Mrs C. T. Dailey, of Christchurch. The bridegroom is the well-known All Black footballer.

Miss Lucy Lopdell, who will leave next week for Hamilton, where she will reside, was, last evening, farewelled by members of the Presbyterian Young Women’s Bible Class, and presented with a fountain pen and a fruit knife. The presentation was made by Rev. H. R. Fell, who spoke of Miss Lopdell’s enthusiastic work with the class, and wished her the best of good luck in her new home. Miss C. Brown and Miss V. Wise also spoke, and Miss Lopdell suitably responded.

Extended leave of absence has been granted the Public Service Commissioner, Mr. P. Verschaffelt. The Prime Minister, in making this announcement at Wellington last night, said that Mr, Verschaffelt had made application for leave, acting on medical advice. The Governor-General had been pleased to grant the request, it being recognised that Mr. Verschaffelt, during the past few years, had had a particularly arduous time. During Mr Verschaffelt’s absence, Mr. A. D. Thomson, who previously acted as deputy, will carry out the duties. — Press Assn.

Mr D. C. Milne, who has been as-sistant-engineer to the Greymouth Harbour Board for the past three years, was last evening appointed engineer, in succession to Mr T. A. Johnston. The Chairman (Mr P. J. McLean) said that Mr Milne had given good service. It was within the province of the Board to elect its own engineer,. and he moved that Mr Milne be appointed, the appointment to be forwarded to the Minister of Marine for approval. The resolution was seconded by Mr J. Ryall, and approved.

The death occurred at Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, early this afternoon, of Mr. John Thomas McKinty, a native of Dunstan, Otago, aged 69 years. Deceased, who was a wellknown resident of Greymouth, had' been in ill-health for the past two or three years, and had been a patient at Lewisham Hospital since November last. He came to the West Coast from Otago as a child, and had resided in Greymouth since. He was for many years employed by the Railway Department as foreman bridge carpenter, but had been retired for some years. He was a member of the Hibernian Society. He leaves one sister, Miss P. McKinty, Greymouth ,two nieces, Miss J. McDonnell (Totara Flat), and Miss P. McDonnell (Greymouth), and a nephew, Mr. Alan McDonnell (Totara Flat).
