RELIEF EXPENDITURE
AUCKLAND BOARD’S TOTAL. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, April 18. The Hospital Board, last year, had a deficit of £10,410. compared with £28.800 in 1932-33, and £53,000 in 1931-32. The Chairman (Mr Wallace) said it was estimated the exchange and sales tax had cost the Board £4OOO or £5OOO a. year. There was no sign of slackening .in the Board’s relief payments. Normal expenditure on relief would average about £20,000, but it was now spending £46,000 annually. In seven years, relief payments had exceeded normal expenditure by £250,000. In 1932, the pay? meats amounted to £92,896, exceeding the total maintenance levy on local bodies, which was £91,223.
