SOCCER FOOTBALL

W. F. A. MEETING

The first meeting of the newly elected management committee of the Westland Football Association was} held last evening, there being present Messrs. W. Robertson (Chairman), E. Airey, J. B. Paton, F. M. Smyth, E. Flood (hon. treasurer) and C. Restieaux (hon. secretary). P. Maughan (Cobden) and M. Morel (Marist) were also present. The N.Z.F.A. wrote acknowledging the appointment of Mr. H. H. A. Renai as the Association’s delegate in Wellington. Mr. Renai -wrote accepting tho position. Dobson A.F.C. forwarded the nomination of A. Hoggarth as a referee. It was decided to forward the nomination to the Referees’ Association. A remit from the Dobson Clqb was received that “all gate receipts from, local fixtures during the 1934 season be shared on a 50/50 basis.” It was decided' that no action be taken. Nominations were received and accepted as follow:—Senior, Cobden, Dobson, Greymouth and Taylorville. Junior, Greymouth and Marist. Third Grade, Cobden, Greymouth, Technical and Taylorville. Fourth Grade, Technical (2). There were no nominataons from the Runanga Clu,b whilst the Cobden Club advised that probably after next Saturday they would be able to nominate a fourth grade team. Mr. Flood suggested’ that owing to the poor nominations in the lower grades that it might be a good scheme to adopt the same attitude as done by the Canterbury F.A. that all senior clubs must enter at least one team in the lower grade. It was finally decided that a meeting of delegates be held on Saturday evening to discuss the lower grade, especially the fourth grade, and that an advertisement be inserted in the newspapers inviting boys who are interested to attend 1 . Also that the Dobson and Taylorville clubs be written to asking that they combine in an endeavour to form a junior team. The usual arrangements were made with regard to the washing of the representative jerseys. The secretary and the treasurer were appointed to sign cheques. Noon was the time decided on to postpone matches, E. Flood and W. be a postponement committee. Vice-Presidents were elected as follow: A. Glen, J. Kent, J. Sharp, J. Nimmo, C. Hogg, R. McLaren, J. McLeod, W, Wright, F. Heslin, G. Manderson. Mr. J. Sharp was appointed, senior selector and Mr, W. Rafferty for the juniors. Cobden Club’s application for a ball for the third grade was declined as it was not the intention of the Committee to create a precedent. It was decided that size 4 balls be granted to the, teams in the fourth grade competition. Mr. Airey expressed surprise that after the strong representation made at the annual meeting that the Referees’ Association had not sent a delegate to the meeting. On his motion, it was decided that both the Referees’ Association and the Primary Schools’ Association be written an invitation to attend future meetings. Future meetings of the Committee will be held at 8 p.m. instead of 7 p.m.

It was decided that the club colours be green, and that a team be nominated in the junior competition.

NEWS AND NOTES. Hardy Annual: The Dobson Club’s annual request for all gates to be shared on a 50/50 basis has again been made to the Centre. The reason for wanting to share the gates is that when Dobson travels they are supposed to be a considerable draw, and the home clubs reap the benefit (?1 whereas, in a home match, the gate amounts to very little, making Dobson the losers on the exchange. The spectators on the Dobson ground are just as numerous as those on other grounds, the only difference being that a large percentage of the Dobson supporters fail to respond when the collection is being made. As usual, the request has been turned down, and it is about time that the Dobson Club saw the futility of making an annual affair of the request.

Few Games Yet: To date, the third is the only grade in which matches have been played. Greymouth having played twice and Technical and Cobden once each. These three teams appear to be fairly evenly matched, and, with Taylorville, will make an interesting competition. Technical is an evenly balanced team with a sound foundation in Vaughan and Pattinson to lead the attack, and Lee and East in charge of the defence. Cobden’s team, as was expected, is yet a little raw, but has some promising boys in Kerr, Rowe and' Forsyth. The lack of a goalkeeper, and an outside left, is all that keeps Greymouth from being | well placed in all positions. Roche. [ Burn and Joe Skeats sho-uld be main-1 ly instrumental in keeping the opposition on the move. A new recruit to the team and the code is Hopkins, who, playing at outside right, showed a fair turn of speed. With a little,

more knowledge of the game, he should develop into a useful winger. Unfortunate: Taylorville’s decision to enter a senior team in lieu of a junior, is most unfortunate for the junior grade, as it leaves only three teams in this grade. In the circumstances, it would have been better for the code had this Club carried out its first intention of entering a junior team, thereby guaranteeing the juniors a game every Saturday, instead of two out of three as it will be now. Also, the few actual senior players that Taylorville actually have would probably have joined other senior clubs, and helped to make a stronger competition in the first grade.

A New Club: A. new club to take the field this season will be Marist Old Boys, who have entered a team in the junior grade. The greens should turn out a fairly strong side, most of the players having shown promise as school boys, and third graders, during past seasons.

Brunner Affairs: Last year there were two senior and two junior teams in the Brunner district. This year, two senior teams only have been entered'. What has become of the remainder of the players? Surely if Dobson and Taylorville were to combine the balance of their players a junior team could be raised, and not only give the surplus players a game, but assist to make a competition of interest for those three teams, which have nominated in the second grade. Ex-West Coasters:

Several former West Coast players were prominent in the opening series of matches in Christchurch during last week-end. Playing for Linwood, W. Thomas scored two goals and was classed as the cleverest man in his team’s attack. Writing of J. Glen, who also turned out with Linwood, a Christchurch writer says, “A new man who showed himself to be a footballer with a fair amount of talent was J. Glen, a recruit to Linwood from the West Coast. He played at left back, and was the soundest men in the Linwood defence.” The former Buller ed good form for Technical, playing representative, J. Teicher, also showed good form for Technical, playing at right back. Caldwell’s Transfer:

Tl? 3 Greymoutb Club will be without the services of Fred Caldwell this season. This versatile player has obtained a position in Christchurch and will be turning out with the Western Club.

Playing For Hakoali: Max Marshall, son of Mr and Mrs H. Marshall, of Greymouth, is playing soccer in Melbourne, for the Hakoah Club, in the grade one reserves. In a match on April 7, Marshall was successful in scoring two goals.

Dispelling Stage Fright: The “Daily Mail” says that, in order to dispel “Wembley stage fright” before the all-important Football Association Cup Final between Ports? mouth and Manchester City on April 28, the Portsmouth club directors are arranging an all-star variety concert for the team in the dressing room. This will be held during the threequarters' of an hour between the arrival of the players and the kick-off. The strain during this period has ruined the chances of many teams. Jack Tinn, the manager, says that he will probably have a “red-nosed comedian and jazz singers.” The players must be made to laugh, preventing a repetition of Portsmouth’s former appearance at the Wembley Stadium, when the players sat dressed for the game for nearly an houj, and went out beaten before the match started.
