UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

; NO. 5 SCHEME CRITICISED* , [per press association.] ■ INVERCARGILL, April 16. Declaring that the No. 5 Scheme for ■ unemployment relief had outlived its ’ usefulness, Mr. L. "A. Niederer, a member of the Southland County Council, ’ made a plea for its discontinuance, at , a conference held to-day with the Miu- , isters for Employment and Public ; Works. In the course of his reply, Mr. Hamilton admitted that other more-satisfac-tory schemes were in operation, but. he asked what was to be done with all the men who are at present working under the scheme, who might not be absorbed by other system of relief. Mr. Hamilton said that it was easier to condemn than to alter, and although the Board realized that there were better schemes, many difficulties presented themselves in effecting a change. He agreed that the No. 4 B Scheme had a great deal to commend it. - ASHBURTON’S PROTEST ASHBURTON, April 17. The opinion of the Borough Council in regard to the Unemployment Board’s policy of penalising towns which make a special effort to assist the unemployment problem, and cutting down theii* weekly allocations for relief workers’ wages, because of these efforts, was expressed in strong terms at a meeting of the Council, when it was stated that no measure for procuring extra relief for distressed families would be undertaken by tlie residents of tlie borough or county, this year. Last year’s special drive realised £l7OO. It was resolved to ask the Unemployment Board for an undertaking that the borough allocation should not be penalised in any way, because of emergency measures taken by the residents. _ ; ?!! .
