PRISONERS SENTENCED. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, April 17. Prisoners were sentenced by Judge Reed in the Supreme Court, as follow; —Howard Godfrey Pudney, two charges, breaking, entering and theft, three years’ Borstal detention. Lawrence Henry Diamond, breaking, entering and theft, two years’ reformative detention. William Edwards, six charges of breaking, entering and theft, and one of theft, IS months’ reformative detention on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. Hector Howard Capil, two charges of indecent assault on a male, twelve months’ hard labour. Ringa Whati Panirau, unlawful carnal knowledge, twelve months’ hard labour. His Honor said that young girls amongst Maoris must be protected, and the only way to protect them was to punish -where a case was proved. Probation for a Maori was little use. It was absolutely necessary in the interests of the Maori race, that there should not be a lot of stunted growths. William Henry Gardiner, theft, and foX charges •of breaking, entering and theft, three years’ probation, and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution.
