LARGE CROWD ON WHARF

[PER press association.]

WELLINGTON, April 14.

The largest crowd that has gathered this year to farewell a passenger liner, thronged the Glasgow "wharf to-day, when the Rangitane left with 350 passengers, including a large draft of naval ratings and many notabilities, including Mr. Bernard' Shaw and Mrs Shaw. Mr. Shaw appeared at the rails periodically, and was there at the last, when the vessel got under Among the familiarities thrown in his direction was one: “Free milk for you when you come back, Bernard.” Excitement was provided by the late arrival of bouquets, a man rushing iif) with full arms and the crowd helping to pass them through the portholes, while he rushed back for more. The Rangitane was flying the payingoff pennant of H.M.S. Laburnum, whose ratings are returning Home, having been replaced by a draft which arrived at Auckland this week.

APPRECIATIVE LETTER

WELLINGTON, April 14.

Further evidence of Mr. and Mrs Shaw’s appreciation of their tour of the Dominion is a letter received by Mr. R. W. Marshall, Wellington district manager of the New Zealand Tourist Department. The letter reads as follows:—“Dear Marshall —We cannot leave New Zealand without acknowledging our obligation to your Tourist Department in the conduct of our tour. Everything has been done for us in the friendliest and completest fashion. We had no trouble at all, and we quite agree that we have never had such a tour in our lives. Travelling without worries did not seem possible, but you have achieved it for us. Many, many thanks. —Yours faithfully, C.F. Shaw; G. Bernard Shaw.”
