MEETINGS

WESTLAND MINING. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, December 19. At the fortnightly meeting of the Westland County Council Mining Executive, it was reported that subsidised men had obtained 21 oz 17 dwts 15 grs of gold for the fortnight. Supervisor Cooper reported that several shafts had been proceeded with. Four bottomed on gold: three under way carried gold. The ground was now deeper and encouraging still. Open cuts and shafting showed about 5d per yard. Supervisor Harris at Humphreys end, had to abandon a shaft owing to inflow of water. Open cuts were put in, and gold from two yards sample of the dirt was sent in. It was satisfactory. Supervisor McQuilkin, in the Kanieri section, reported a cut giving a good prospect with 15 feet of wash, estimated at nine grains to the load. There appeared to be a valuable area between Stripland and Stoney Creeks, and was ideal sluicing ground. The gold recovered would be sent in. It was resolved the area be further explored.

Satisfaction was expressed at the encouraging nature of the prospecting reports.

Lynch, C. Hart, Thornhill, Cooper, A. C. Armstrong, Rev. Knights, G. Gilchrist.' and J. R. Menzies. An apology for absence was received from T. Stuart. An ex-soldier’s invalid son forwarded a list of tools of trade required.—

It was decided to purchase material required. Chas. R. B. Upjohn, of Ross wrote regarding the outfitting of his son for Flock House training.—The Secretary reported that with the assistance of the Patriotic Association, and the Ross sub-branch, arrangements were finalised and the lad will proceed to Flock House oh January 9. The Hokitika Borough Council acknowledge receipt of communication regarding the non-observance of Anzac Day. The Council advised that it would see that the day was fittingly observed in future. The Westport R.S.A. wrote asking for the transfer of W. F. Smyth.—Attended to. The Waimate R.S.A. advised that the financical membership of their branch at November 30 was 132 (Hokitika 143). The Secretary of Ross Sub-branch advised that at present no members are being assisted on the subsidy scheme. —Received. The Ross and Kumara Sub-branch wrote regarding particulars of a proposed art union, the proceeds of which are to relieve unemployment among the ex-servicemen in the district. It was decided to hold the art union and the allocation of the proceeds to be on the basis of tickets sold by the various branches. It was decided to forward to the Kumara Sub-Branch the sum of £2 5/- to assist in purchasing an artificial hand for an ex-serviceman on the unemployed list. Headquarters advised that there is no prospect of the Canteeen Funds Board increasing the ’grant for December. The Board is at present short of liquid cash, and it will be necessary for headquarters to partially finance the December grant in order to ensure that allocations could be despatched to local associations by December 15. Regarding the payment of license fee to the A.P.R. Assn, and advising the Branch to get in touch with A.P.R.A’s attorney at Wellington in an effort to get a reduction. It was decided to hold tlie matter over. Headquarters forwarded circular of Dominion membership ladder and advising that the Hokitika Branch is 30th on the list; also advising that the canteen funds allocation for November was £9 and December was £9. The Christchurch R.S.A. wrote regarding the cottage home settlement, and supplying form of application, and also conditions of admission. The scheme is to provide cottages toi exservicemen whose earning, capacity has ceased to exist and who are not in receipt of pensions sufficient to maintain them. It was decided to place the contents of the circular before the next quarterly general meeting. The Secretary read a balance sheet of the euchre tournaments to date. It was resolved that a vote of thanks to the euchre committee for their efforts in connection with the successful i mining of the tournaments be recorded on the minutes. Arrangements were finalised for the running of the Christmas Tree party.
