At the Supreme Court, Gordon Samuel Burk, 29, formerly records clerk of the City Council, was admitted to probation for three years, for theft of £l5 from registered letters, and was ordered to make restitution. The Judge said he felt justified in treating the thefts as isolated acts, committed under pressure, and not as part Gf a dishonest system. AUCKLAND, November 8. Extradited from Australia, where they were recently arrested, Terence Monchieff Nixon. 22, and Cyril Robert Hankins, 25, appeared at the Police Court, bdth charged on December 29 with stealing £1795,. the property of the Government. Nixon was described, as a clerk in the Government’s employment, and Hankins as an insurance clerk. They were remanded until November 16. Bail was fixed at. .£5OO each. The “Yorkshire Post” says that widespread, press publicity increased the consumption of the Dominions’ butter in Yorkshire and the North of England, which were previously foreign strongholds. The sale of New Zealand butter increased by 300,000 cwts. in nine months, and cheese increased by 200,000 cwts. Australia is reducing supplies, rather than send inferior quality butter. The “Sun Service” understands that the Home Office, in co-operation with other Departments, is considering an extensive scheme to safeguard the civil population in the event of air raids. Compulsory training of the workless is the motif of the Government Unemployment Bill, says the “Chronicle,” which understands that relief will be conditional on attendance at the Government training camps. If the unemployed refuse to attend, the State will disclaim further responsibility. *
