NEW YORK ELECTIONS

BITTER CAMPAIGN ENDING

[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]

NEW YORK, November 5.

For the first time in sixteen years, or since Mr John Mitchell was Mayor of New York City, there is a likelihood that Tammany Hall will be defeated in the municipal elections of this city, when the voters go to the polls on Tuesday. The three-cornered fight this time, quickly revealed an unexpected strength in the Tammany opposition. The “Literary Digest” has taken a straw vote, which has shown mounting strength on the side of Mr La Guard*!. The vote put Mr McKee as second with Mr O’Brien running as third. - Two million persons have registered, and one of the largest votes in the history of the city is expected. The campaign has been exceptionally bitter. To-day thousands of persons stood in line outside the Tammany Club where "a dollar and instructions how to vote” were offered every applicant.

The racial issue was early injected into the campaign when Mr La Guardia and Mr McKee charged each other with being anti-Semitic. Orily the interposition of the Jewish organisations with the warning that this racial dispute befogs the real issue, namely, a necessity for reducing municipal expenses and obtaining clean city government, has prevented the campaign from developing into a plain muckraking contest. With the City budget in excess of half a billion dollars, the Tammany organisation is likely to feel the electorate’s wrath, on Tuesday.
