WEST COAST COMPETITIONS. SEVEN MATCHES DECIDED. Favourable weather yesterday assisted in the opening of the West Coast Association’s competition matches. The problem of obtaining grounds was overcome, wickets being available at Cobden; Victoria Park, Karoro, Omoto, Brunner, Dunollie and Kumara. Sat.turday cricket had to be'postponed pwirig to the heavy rain which fell throughout the day. The results of yesterday’s matches were:'— ' / A. DIVISION [United A. beat Marist—2pts. Cobden A. beat United B.—2pts. Brunner beat Runanga—2pts. Cobden B. beat Star —2ptsl B. DIVISION

Brunner beat Runanga—2pts. Kumara beat Camerons —2pts. Katnaka beat Marist—3pts. UNITED A BEAT MARIST. There was a fair attendance of onlookers at the Karoro Sports Ground to witness the match between United A and Marist, which was kept down to a one innings contest, the rate of scoring by United being'exceedingly slow. Casey won the toss and decided to; field, Bayley and Morris being sent to th 6 wickets. This pair made a good Start for Marist, hitting up 34 before Bayley, who had given a bright display, was'trapped by a fast one from Casey. Marshall was never comfortable, 'and after surviving a couple of overs was clean bowled by De Freatus. : Matthews joined Morris and the scoring

rate increased, but Morris was then well held by Mallby. 1 Blackaby had a brief but merry stay at the wickets, hitting up 14 in quick time. The score was 81 for 4 when Clarke joined Matthews, but two runs later, Matthews litfed one from Anderson to Restieaux. Wickets then commenced to fall quickly, and the innings closed for 120/ N. Kiely, who was included in the team as eleventh man when Marist found that! they ’ were a playdr short, scored 10 rujis and carried his bat. Anderson bowled well, securing 6 wickets for 31 runs, and kept a good length throughout. Grooby and Spneder opened for United, and throughout the innings the scoring was slow, Casey being the only batsman -to show any cohfidehce against the bowling. Grooby wore down the attack, the monotony of his straight bat flicking the ball doWn. in front of him, giving the bowlers a splendid average of maiden overs. While Grooby’s tactics * are tiresome to watch, they were undoubtedly the means of breaking down the Marist attack and opening the way for h United victory yesterday. Apart from Spender and Tomkies, the remaining United I batsmen who went to the wickets found Carr's deliveries too much for them. Carr was the best bowler on tho ground. He kept a very good Ifength, and was seldom off the wicket. He should prove invaluable to the Marist team tills season.

United won by 21 rums, scoring 141 for'the loss of eight wickets. Following are the scores'in detail: —■ ' ■Marist.—N.
