POLLING DATE FIXED. [PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] 1 WELLINGTON, October 31. Although the official announcement will be withheld for some days, it is learnt on good authority that Cabinet has selected Wednesday, December 2, as the date of the general elections. CANTERBURY CANDIDATES. CHRISTCHURCH, October 31. The Secretary of the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee states it is unlikely that the Labour Party will nominate any candidate to oppose Mr. Forbes for Cheviot. Mr. C. Morgan Williams, who had been mentioned as likely to contest the Hurunui seat, will probably act in the capacity of organiser for th© Rev. J. K. Archer, in the Kaiapoi electorate. Mr. L. C. Walker, of Hornby, will contest the Christchurch North electorate at the general election as an Independent candidate. Mr. Walker, it is stated, has agreed to stand at the request of a large number of business people and residents. In the event of Mr. J. Connolly, deciding not to contest the Mid-Canterbury seat against the Hon. D. Jones, there is a possibility of Labour nominating a candidates.

No arrangement has been made by the Labour Party for commencing the campaign in the various electorates, and it is probable that no public meetings will bo held until the session of Parliament ends.

Mi’ W. Angland, ex-Mayor, expressed his intention to contest the Timaru seat at the general election as an Independent Liberal. Mr Angland’s decision will mean a triangular contest between Labour (Mr Clyde Carr, M.P.), an Independent Liberal and a Coalition candidate. Mr A. A. McLachlan, a solicitor, announces definitely that he is contesting the Riccarton seat as an unofficial United candidate. He is a member of the City Council, and stood for Riccarton at the last election. Sporting MOSGIEL WOOLLEN COMPANY. DUNEDIN, October 30. The annual report of the directors of the Mosgiel Woollen Co. states that although conditions during the year had been somewhat difficult owing to the universal depression, the results revealed in the balance-sheet were very satisfactory.
