HOW THEY RAN. [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, November 2. The Banks Pehin’Sula R.C. experienced good weather for its spring meeting on Saturday. The track was in good order. Big dividends in the first two eyents tied a lot of money up, though with a good attendance the club should come out very little behind, if any. FIRST TO THE COAST.

Nine scratchings reduced the field for the Okains * Trial Stakes to thirteen, and the unlucky number was an omen of what was to happen. Lochlaggan was made a very warm favourite, Tea Garden, Song Box, Manetto 'and Grand Review coming in for moderate support, each carrying about a quarter of the favourite’s total. In a snap start the favourite was never given a chance, and Babrq,zi was squeezed right back, while > Gylena missed the jump out altogether. Tea Garden showed up momentarily, but Manetto' and Battle Hero soon displaced him, never to be. afterwards headed; the West Coast-owned gelding Battle Hero winning by about two lengths from. Manetto, with Song Box another half length away. Battle Hero won nicely and paid over* a quarter of a century, but with a better start he might not have been in it. Azalia was going very fast at the finish and with another furlong would have troubled the placed horses. Song Box has plenty of speed but does not seem to stay on so far. The favourite was not in a good position at any stage, and something considerably better can be expected from her later. Autumn Bird was always thereabouts, and should win a hack race or two at the Country meetings. GOLD' PAPER WON EASILY. Gold Paper behaved himself at the barrier better than at Rangiora, when out for the Duvauchelle Trot, and beginning brilliantly he had a big break early and never looked like being caught, eventually winning by about eight lengths. The favourite, Ciro, dwelt slightly and Goldworthy passed him in the first hundred yards. Tatsy de Oro, Coral Prince, Wainoni. and Ciro was the order at intervals behind the leader along the back, and Ciro put in a good run to beat Goldworthy for second money. The winner paced very solidly, though his good beginning was in the main responsible for his success. Ciro was backed down to less than even money, and had he gone away better the race would.probably have been in his keeping, though the winner might improve sufficiently to be a strong rival' in the three-year-old classics. Tatsy de Oro and Accross were the mpst prominent of the remainder and the latter was finishing on well enough to be kept in mind for later meetings.

JALOUX WINS WELL. \ Ravine was produced in the Akaroa Handicap and he wound up favourite from Riri and Jaloux in a fairly even pool. It was an excellent race and Ranelagh and Minerval set out to make -the pace from The Dove, Riri, and Jalolix. Rose of Orange made a Quick run along the back and turning for home she, Minerval, and Ranelagh

were showing the w'ay to Jaloux, Ravine, and Royal Love. The three in front soon petered out, and in a good finish Jaloux won by a clear length from Royal Love, with Ravine another half length back. The winner and Royal Love finished very solidly, and will have many ’friends if produced m the' New Zealand' Cup. ’ Royal Love had some ground to make up half-way through the piece and he did well to outstay Ravine, who was'stopping in the last hundred yards. Rose oi Orange was rushed up too quickly, and had nothing in reserve after turning for home. The surprise of the race was the very fine run put in over the last bit by Nightguard. He was well back half a mile from home, and even in that position did not get the best of passages. Up to the present his form has been very moderate, but on to-day’s running he will perhaps be among the good three-year-olte over a journey. Martian Chief did not receive the best of passages, and the weight had Black Duke in trouble over a furlong from home. Riri’s race was not a good Indication of his having chance in the New Zealand Cup. COAST SCORES IN HALSWELL. Solvent was made favourite for the Halswell Hdck Handicap, and she ran a good ’ race under difficulties. She jumped out well,’ but Was steadiied, and then ran into trouble. She made up a lot of ground in the run home, and received another check about a hundred yards from home to finish fourth. Monastic was always well up and he won well from the fast-finish-ing Sailor’s Love. The last-named came from a long way back, and is one worth keeping in mind. Countermarch stuck to his work more solidly thoii usual, though lie was a little lucky to beat Solvent for third money. Grecian Prince was going better at the finish than the poor support accorded him suggested he would do, and he was just behind Solvent at the finish. Of the others, Distract did best, but would not beat any of those who finished in front of her at the weights, should they meet again. A GRAND FINISH. In a good pool on the Le Bons Handicap, Spoon finished up favourite from the Juniper-Honeycomb bracket. Honeycomb Was chopped out from an otherwise good start, and Limited and Wise Choice showed out first. Rin Tin Tin soon ran through and, turning for home, he and Limited were in front from Taka Tamil, Spoon, Rational IL and Juniper. In a great race home, first Rin Tin Tin, then Spoon, Rational 11.,. Honeycomb and Juniper in turn, were proclaimed the winner, Juniper finally just getting there by a head, with Spoon a length behind Rational 11. The winner ran a great race and he had to literally push his way through the line in front to get there. He will win over longer journeys later. Honeycomb’s was another good performance and but for getting left he might have beaten Juniper. As it was, after getting to the front 150 yards from home he stopped in the last fifty yards to be beaten into fourth place. He is English-bred seemb tq. have got over the lameness that affected him’early in his career in New Zealand. Rational 11. was only beaten in the last few strides, and he will earn some money for his West Coast owner. Rational 11, Juniper, and Honeycomb will all show more improvement with the race than will Spoon.

FAST PASSAGE SCORES WELL. Jason’s Quest, Pixie Gold, and Fast Passage were the best backed in the Kaituna Highweight and two of them paid the dividends. The winner, Fast Passage, is a sister to Waterline and though she will never be in the same class as her brother she will win good distance handicaps later in the season. She was not in the picture until well into .the straight, but she finished briliantly and Avon well from Pixie Gold, who was always handy and was beaten only in the last 100 yards. Jason’s Quest did not get too good a run after turning for home, though she could not gb on when the chance came in the last furlong. Ma Belle Polly and Miss Bradbury were ridden ‘‘into the ground one in front, and more patiently handled, Miss Bradbury will have her turn again soph. Fortune’s Wheel in third place ran her best race to date, and with a strong horseman aboard again she will run a mile and a-quafter later- Night Flyer showed up at the distance, but that was the end ‘of him. FAVOURITE BROUGHT DOWN. ' Royal Parade and Senorita carried most confidence in the Little River Handicap Trot, but the favourite after dwelling slightly was brought down, when Accross’ fell after Covering about three furlongs. Senorita made a bad mistake in the first quarter, but after that settled down to jihca right up to the work she had done" m Addington and in a punishing finish won by about a long head from Tatsy de Oro. The latter and Pretender were ‘ the two leaders for most of the way, Pretender being displaced by Mauser, Hard Words, and Senorita at the far bend the last time. Mauser looked like the winner at the home turn, but had to put up with third money about a length behind Tatsy de Oro. Neil Dillon and Goldworthy were the only others prominent at the finish- The winner is likely to go a good way up the ladder as the season advances. She went 4.49 from a 5.0 mark, and would have improved on this had she kept her feet all the time. MOORBIRD IMPRESSES.

Waiwere, Moorbird, and Sharp Thorn was the order of favouritism of the best-backed division, Waiwene and Awamutu rushed to the front and turning for home were attended by Solwit, Sharp Thorn, and Moorbird. When the' last-mentioned moved up the race was all over and she won easily by about four lengths. High Tor put in an appearance round the bend, and he stayed on to beat Sharp Thorn by a neck. When the winner steps out again she will be hard to beat, particularly if .the race is over a little longer course. Waiwene does not stay. SPEARFUL WINS AT CARTERTON. KOZAN TAKES MEMORIAL. CARTERTON, October 31. For the Carterton races there was a good attendance- The weather was splendid, while the track conditions were hard- The tote handled £7,104 10/-, through the 10/- tote as against £12,168 last year. MELBOURNE CUP TO-MORROW. The seventy-first Melbourne Cup will | be decided to-morrow afternoon, when, if everything' is favourable in the direction of the going, Phar Lap win attempt'to win his'second Cup, and at the same time' 4 establish a weightcarrying record fox’ the race. He has been handicapped to carry 10.10’, and the greatest weight under which the race has been'won wus the 10.5 carried by the famous Carbine in 1900. Archer, the only horse to 1 win two Melbourne Cups scored in the first contest for the race in 1861 with 9.12 and followed up in the next year by carrying 10.2 to victory. Carbine took 3.281 to cover the tvjo miles, but that time has been bettered and once equalled in the last 15 contests. Night- ‘ march when he won in 1929 took 3.26 J and Phar Lap, carrying 121bs less than he has been asked to carry to-morrow won last’yd’ar in 3.273. New Zealand can claim the credit for producing the four best horses in to-morrow’s race, according to the handicapper. Phar Lap first saw light in Canterbury, then there is Second Wind, a Hawke’s Bay product, then Veilmond who was bred by Mr G. M. Currie, and Concentrate, who is Wellington-owned, and .upon whom New Zealand is relying. Following is the card: — * Melbourne Cup, 7000 sovs. and a trophy of 200 sovs.; second 1250 sovs., third 750 sovs. out of the prize.
