CANADA & AUSTRALIA

“GOODWILL” SHIP DEPARTS. [BY CABLE —PBESB ASSN. —COPYEIGHT.] MONTREAL, October 31. Loaded with a varied cargo, the “Canadian Constructor” sailed to-day for Australia. The Captain carries letters of goodwill from Mr. James McDougall (President of the Canadian Manufacturers’ Association) -to Mr. James McDougall (President of the Associated Chambers of Manufacturers’ of Australia) of Melbourne, and to Mr. H. Gordon Bennett (President of the New South Wales Chamber of Manufacturers.)

In addition to other cargo, the Canadian Constructor is carrying a number of live animals, including five Holstein cows, which are going out under the care of Mr. H. Heeney, an enterprising farmer of Abymin, Quebec. In his letter to Mr McDougall, the President of the Canadian Manufacturers’ Association, says: “The welcome extended is an encouraging indication of further trade between Australia and Canada. If Canadian products create in Australia even a small part of the interest which has been aroused in the inspection of the Australian products here, we shall feel adequately rewarded.”

SUGAR CANE SAVERS. MONTREAL, October 28. An army of Canadian flies is speeding across Canada en route to Australia, where they will battle against the sugar cane borer on the Queensland plantations. The files are of an unpronounceable scientific name, and have been carefully reared by the Canadian Government entomologists. They are the sworn enemies of the common white grub, which damages the potatoes, vegetables, and small fruits of this Dominion. It is presumed their animosity will extend to the Australian sugar cane boxer, which is a close relative to the Canadian grub.
