LOCAL AND GENERAL

With the closing down of the Buller Gorge railway, Buller will lose one of its finest forwards in Sam Grogan, who is expecting to be shifted to the Greymouth district (states the “Westport News.”)

The rare experience of being tried by a Judge and jury on the same charge, twice in one day, befel a young man, yesterday (telegraphed our Auckland correspondent). At the first trial, the jury failed to agree after four hours’ retirement, but the second jury brought in a verdict of not guilty, after half an hour. The second trial took place immediately after the first jury was discharged.

In the course of his evidence before the Commission of Enquiry, at Greymouth yesterday, one witness stated that Greymouth was built up, and people would be forced to go to Cobden for sections. This brought a reply from Mr F. A. Kitchingham, who pointed out that the Joyce estatt? was recently subdivided into 90 sections at Greymouth, and the Kilgour estate into 45 sections. Despite tnac, one land agent could not sell more than one or two sections, in the past twelve months. Another syndicate had 30 sections at Greymouth, but it had taken them 20 years to sell the land.

The uplifted land which before the earthquake constituted the bed of the inner harbour is beginning to take on pronounced signs of growing vegetation, states the “Hawkes’ Bay Herald,” while another notable fact is that the comparatively small amount of water that remains there is gradually diminishing and what there is of it is fresh instead of salt, as was the case before the upheaval. Residents of Westshore hold the opinion that the small tremors which have been experienced from time to time since the main shocks of February 3, are continuing to raise the land still further, and this is borne out by the fact that there is now even less water to be seen in the inner harbour than there was, say, in March last, seven months ago.

Evidence has recently been taken by the Industries and Commerce Committee of the House, in connection with the Licensing Amendment Bill, sponsored by -the member for Auckland suburbs (Mr Mason) in which he seeks to vary, in several respects, the conditions attaching to the issue of wine makers’ licenses. Reporting on the Rill, yesterday, the Committee stated that as the promoters of the measures had found it impossible to bring forward their evidence this session, .it had no recommendation to inak 0 other than that the subject matter of the Bill be considered by the Government, when further licensing legislation was being brought down. —“Star” Special Service.

Last week, through falling on rock? a man.named Harry Morgan had his left leg broken just above the ankle. Morgan, who comes from Westport, was one of a party prospecting at . Long Beach Preservation Inlet. The accident occurred about a mile from ’ the beach (says the Southland Times) L and his mates had a difficult task in , carrying the victim out through the 5 bush, especially as Morgan is a big 5 man. He was brought to Bluff by Mr |( Bragg, of Stewart Island, in the ? i launch Mystery, the voyage being - done in 14 hours —fast time for a - small craft. At Bluff, Dr A. Stewart l attended the patient, and the latter c was afterwards conveyed by ambu--1 lance to the Southland Hospital. It > was fortunate that a boat was avail- ' able to brings him across. Morgan I showed great fortitude throughout, . not voicing a single complaint at any time.

Spectators on the South Tip on Wednesday afternoon experienced an anxious time watching the progress of a small launch manned by four local youths, crossing, and later re-crossing the Greymouth bar, which at the time was not at its smoothest. Tempted by an apparently calm sea, the youths had decided that crossing the bar would present no difficulties, but a heavy swell proved uncomfortable, and one wave nearly swamped the launch, which was tossed about. The crossing was at length made safely, and once over the bar, four thoroughly frightened youths debated as to a possible method of returning. A strong southerly breeze convinced them of the inadvisability of remaining out at sea, and the boat ones more essayed the crossing of the bar. The return journey was even more uncomfortable than the outward, the knowledge that if a big wave did send some more water into the boat it would affect the magne.to, and in all probability, cripple the engine, causing concern. After several narrow escapes the crossing was safely made, to the relief of those who watched from the Tip, and the adventurous crew landed their craft safely in the Cobden lagoon. The incident was not without its touch of humour, for as .the launch returned over the bar, one of the youths was down on his knees praying, and two of the others were stripping preparatory to' what they rightly considered would be a difficult. swim.
