DISPLACED WORKMEN
SCHEME FOR RE-EMPLOYMENT. [PIB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, October 28. Details of the arrangements made for the employment of those men displaced by the cessation of work on the Napier-Gisborne. South Island Main Trunk, and Westport-Inanga-hua railway lines, were announced by the Minister of Public Works (Mr Coates). The 1501 men concerned will be placed on roading works throughout the country, and accommodation will be provided for them, it having been decided that they will be classified as relief workers, although contracts might be let. Housing has been airanged for the wives of married men in the hutments already in use at the railway works. Mr Coates said he was pleased to say that now it had been found pos. silile to make arrangements to absorb all the men in other employment. The number employed on the lines mentioned at the date of stoppage was Napier-W aikokopu 445, South Island Main Trunk, 694; West-port-Inangahua 362.
