INTER-EMPIRE TRADE

AUSTRALIA AND CANADA [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN.—COPYRIGHT.] (Reed.-Oct. 28, 10.30 a.m.). MONTREAL, October 27.

Considerable favourable Press comment has arisen over the goodwill ship. The “Montreal Star” says: “It is possible to visualise the form in which this goodwill ship will be followed by many others carrying Empire products to Empire markets over all the seven seas. It is expected that Canada will be in a position to negotiate reciprocally in beneficial trade treaties with New Zealand and South Africa. The Vancouver “Morning Star” says: “Few Incidents in the relationship between Canada and Australia have received so much publicity as the voyage of the goodwill ship. Australia Week should be an annual event in Canada.” The “Montreal Gazette” comments: “Inter-Imperial trade cannot but receive a powerful impetus from such exchange of goods on a goodwill basis.” CANADA AND NEW ZEALAND VANCOUVER, October 27. Plans of the British Columbia division of the Canadian Manufacturers’ Association, to send a delegation of business men to New Zealand and Fiji, havo been referred, pending the New Zealand elections. A party of forty is assured. It is hoped that a new treaty with New Zealand will be negotiated meanwhile. AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND SYDNEY, October 27. Mr. Forde, Minister of Customs, returned to the subject of reciprocal trade between Australia and New Zealand, to-day. He said that he would possibly visit the Dominion, or alternatively a Dominion Minister may be invited to Australia, to discuss the extension of trade between the two countries. Pressure of Parliamentary work and the economic crisis had prevented deeper consideration of this question earlier, but the time had arrived when a better understanding should be achieved as there was much in common between Australia and New Zealand, which would justify a substantial development of trade. Meanwhile, any representations which the Dominion Government care to make would receive the sympathetic and earnest consideration of the Commonwealth Government.
