[MB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] BABY’S BODY IN RIVER BLENHEIM, October 27. The body of an unidentified male infant was found floating in the Opawa river this morning. Evidently it had been in the water for some time. The body was entirely naked and much decomposed.

Percy William O’Hara, fourteen, was drowned in the Wanganui rivei. With two companions, deteased went off shore in a “flattie” which commenced to fill. The trio jumped into the water. O’Hara could not swim. Lawrence and Smith, his companions, dived for him, but were unsuccessful. The body has not been located.

’PLANE AS AMBULANCE AUCKLAND, October 24. A schoolmaster at Waiotahi, near Opotiki, F. K. Grant, who was suffering from appendicitis, was flown fiom Opotiki to Auckland in two and aquarter hours this morning, and thieequarters of an hour after reaching the aerodrome was in bed in hosr- - His wife accompanied him on the flight, which was made in a threeseater Puss Moth ’plane.

COMPENSATION CLAIM. GISBORNE, October 27.

The Arbitration Court is engaged in hearing a claim for compensation made by the administrators of the. estate of Paul Christensen Nissen, null manager, deceased, against Trevor Thomas and Donald Victor Thomas, owners of a sawmill at Tuai. The claim is for £lOOO compensation, and £5O medical expenses, it being alleged that Nissen’s death was due to a strain received in the course of his work.

MURDER CHARGE. HAMILTON, October 27. Arthur Walter Smith, aged 50 years, appeared at the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court this morning, charged with the alleged murcler of his wife, Louise Alexandra Smith, on October 3, at Hamilton. Accused is still suffering from the effects of a wound in the throat. He was assisted to and from the dock by a police officer. He was remanded till November 4. • ;

MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE WELLINGTON, October 26

Investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Percy William Childs, carrier of 5 Crossby Terrace, who was found unconscious outside the Royal Tiger Hotel, Abel Smith Street, on October 17, culminated on Saturday evening in the arrest of William Henry Boyce, a carpenter, when Boyce appeared before Mr. McNeil, S M. to-day, charged with committing manslaughter by unlawfully striking Childs. Sub-Inspector Ward asked for a re, mand until November 4, which was granted, bail being allowed.

YOUTH’S THEFTS.

AUCKLAND,. October 27.'

A youth of seventeen, who three times has broken into premises, and stolen apparatus for his chemical experiments, appeared at the Police Court, charged with the theft of glassware valued at £l2, the property of the Gas. Company, whose laboratory he had entered, through a fanlight. It was stated that the instruments wore recovered intact. No attempt was made to dispose of them. The youth had a bent for chemistry and apparently was unable to resist the temptation to steal instruments he could not afford to buy. . The Magistrate remanded the accused, named Keith George Brierly, for a report from the Probation 0.ficer. Bail was allowed.

YOUTH DROWNED. AUCKLAND, October 25.

Arthur Wellsted, aged 16, is missing and is believed to be drowned as the result of a fourteen-foot yacht capsizing in the Rangitoto channel at midday to-day. His companion, Cyril Webster, aged 18, was picked up by a launch after being in the water for about one hour. A sudden squall struck the boat, which capsized. The youths got into the dinghy and commenced to row to Rangitoto Island; but the dinghy swamped. Webster struck out for the Island, and when last seen Welsted was holding an oar.. Launches searched the locality without finding Wellsted. who is a son of Mr A. W. Wellsted, commercial agent for the New Zealand Railways.
