HEAVY TAXATION’S SEQUEL. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Reed. October 27. 8 a.m.) LONDON. October 26. The “News-Chronicle” says that owing to the new taxation, the Earl of Harewood is selling his London residence. Chesterfield House, and letting Goldsborough Hall, in Yorkshire, and is also reducing his Newmarket racing establishment. Lord Harewood is reputedly one of the wealthiest men in England, but is hard hit by taxes. He and Princess Mary are anxious to make economies without dismissing any employees. Chesterfield is London’s finest house. Lord Harew’ood bought it at great cost and re-decorated it before his marriage to Princess Mary. It contains his magnificent collection of old masters.
It is recalled that Lord Harewood recently sacrificed the Canning Jewel, which traditionally was a gift by a prince of the House of Medici to one of the Mogul Emperors. It was found in the Treasury of the King of Oudh, when Delhi was taken during the Indian Mutiny, and came into the possession of Lord Canning, the first Viceroy. Later it passed to the Harewoods.
It is also announced that taxation is compelling Lord Durham to close Lampten Castle, and he is probably selling his ancestral paintings including Lawrence’s “Red Boy,” for which he refused an American offer of £BO,OOO last year. Lord Sackville is selling two of Reynold’s portraits from his famous collection at Knole Park.
