HOLIDAY RACING

GREYMOUTH TROTTING MEETING

RESULTS FROM ALL COURSES

Unsettled weather conditions had a deterrent effect on the spring meeting of the Greymouth Trotting Club, held at Victoria Park on Saturday and yesterday. There was not the usual large attendance, and the investments also recorded a heavy decrease on last year’s figures. While a' drop in the turnover was expected, the uncertain weather was responsible for only a fair outside patronage, and this reflected adversely on the figures handled by the totalisator. On the opening day the investments were £7,207 compared with £12,059/10/for the first day last year. Yesterday the total was £10,158/10/- against ,£16,117/10/- for the second day last October, The total investments for the two days reached £17,365/10/ against £28,177 last year, a decrease of £lO,Bll/10/-. The standard of racing was good, and while the brilliancy of Red Shadow in the Greymouth Handicap, somewhat robbed this race of its customary splendid contest, the Jubilee Handicap yesterday was one of the finest races wit. nessed on the Victoria Park track. Arrangements for the meeting were everything that could be desired and the programme was carried out with a minimum of delay. Very few horses declined their engagements, with the result that good fields demanded the attention of investors in every race. Owing to the holding state of the track the times recorded were slow in comparison with last year. The public generally were a little astray in their selections, with the result that several dividends returned were large. When Ariki Toa won the Jubilee Handicap he paid a false price, for on the opening day he revealed splendid form in the Greymouth Handicap, finishing close up in fourth place. As he is a determined and speedy sprinter, his neglect on the totalisator yesterday may be accounted for by the -fact that Red Shadow was deemed by a large number of investors to be unbeatable, while Sir Guy came with a reputation. There were no accidents of serious import, and the Stipendiary Steward had little cause to be unduly concerned with the racing, which was clean throughout. Owing to the indisposition of the President, Mr H. W. Kitcflingham, who was unable to be present' yesterday, his duties were ably carried out by Mr T. E. Coates. Mr F. J. Beer, Stipendiary Steward, was also indisposed yesterday, and Mr D. H. Roberts acted ably in the capacity of Stipendiary Steward. Results were: —

He came at the finish but could not get to Peter Fashion who won by half a length. The favourite was close up third, with Bingen Spiers next. Tote £7991.

RACING DESCRIBED.

[special to “stab.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, October 27.

The North Canterbury Club's meeting was quite successful from a racing point of view. A traffic jam on the road spoilt the totalisator returns, a great many people not arriving till after the second race- The track was in great order. The Highweight Handicap was a boil-over. The favourite, Star Shooter, failing to handle the course, finished last- He was first out, then when steadied at the five furlongs had only Maurena behind him, while Quantum and Pixie Gold were going well in front. Pixie Gold won easily. Quantum failed to stay with his weight ,and had little to spare from Night Flyer. Maurena, who struck trouble, is a likely winner an the New Zealand Cup meeting. The West Coast had a good win in the Trial Plate. Monastic and Lochlaggon showed the way to the turn, then Monastic went on to win from the fast finishing Jason’s Quest. Loch-

laggan’s rider lost an iron at the turn, but that did not make any difference to the result. Mr E. Sheedy’s colt Patrol was always well up and will be good later on. Jason’s Quest should stay better than any she met .in the race. . Despite the harsh handicap, Win was again made favourite for the Rangioia Cup. He began better than usual, but lacked brilliancy. He had a good position at the turn behind Ramo, Rose of Orange and Metal Bird, wtih Locksley alongside him. In the run home Ramo and Locksley came right away, Ramo winning by half a length, with Pharaoh third, finishing well four lengths away. Ramo showed a big improvement on Timaru form and is likely to win again, as he carried 51b overweight. Rose of Orange gave a good fourth performance for a maiden. Goldworthy set out to win all the way in the View Hill Trot, but just failed in the last bit to beat Harvest Time. He knocked nearly sixeteen seconds off his handicap. The two seconds penalty stopped Harvest Time in the later trot, while Goldworthy, unpenalised, ran right up to form by winning easily and clipping thirteen seconds off his handicap at a mile and a-quarter. The favourite, Senorita, in the View Hill Trot did not go away well, and was never in the hunt. Later Symmetry, favourite in the Ashley Trot, was unlucky to strike one so solid as Goldworthy, but her tuin will come. Shatter was a hot favourite for the Flying Handicap, but could not handle the turns, and was well beaten. He should not be condemned on this form when the Cup meeting comes along. Great Star was always well placed behind Sleipner, and Spoon, and he finished on well. The race should do Spoon good, in view of the Banks Peninsula meeting. Arrowmaid ran poorly and much below her track form. Like Shatter, the turning course was no good to her. Solvent ran a clinking race under her weight, in the Oxford Hack Handicap She was conceding twenty-seven pounds to the winner, and twenty-nine pounds to Crash. The time for this race was nearly a second better than that for open Hying, and the Diacquenod filly was finishing on, and will be hard in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton. With 7-4 Grecian Prince was the favourite and had every chance. He led into the straight, then collapsed, and would be better ridden in behind than if taken to the front. Weatherly won well and may show further improvement. Ravine gave the West Coast another win. He won well, but might find the favourite Juniper and Rational 11. harder to beat on any other course. Juniper particularly ran out at numerous bends in the track, but was finishing on really well. Taku Tamu showed a lot of speed early and might soon be in the money.
