LADY CAMBRIDGE’S WEDDING

LONDON, October 25.

Autumn sunshine favoured the wedding of Lady May Cambridge, daughter of the Earl and Countess of Athlone, who was married to Captain Abel Smith at Balcombe, Sussex. The wedding took place in the presence of the Queen, the Prince of Wales. Prince George, the Duke of Gloucester, the Duchess of York, and other members of the Royal Family. The bride arrived ten minutes late. She broke . tradition by omitting the word “obey” from her vows. The Queen witnessed the signing of the Twenty thousand people visited Balcombe for the wedding. Lady May was a typical English bride. She wore a clinging, white satin robe and an exquisite Brussels lace veil, which the Queen and the bride’s mother wore at their own weddings. • The Queen was dressed in purple velvet, with a black velvet coat, trimmed with sable. The eight adult bridesmaids included the Princess Ingrid'of Sweden, and the Princess Sybilla of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. The Princess Betty was one of the four child attendants. Archbishop Carter, formerly of Cape Town, where he was a close friend of the Earl and Countess of Athlone, conducted the service, assisted by the Bishop of Chichester and the Rector of Balcombe. Sir Walford Davies directed the village choir, which was reinforced by the choir of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor.
