Mr and Mrs O. Egden, who have been visiting Mr and Mrs H. J. Hudd, South Beach, returned to-day to Christchurch.

Mr John Muir, of Gladstone, who has been an inmate of the Grey River Hospital, with pneumonia, for the last five weeks, has been discharged.

Mr. Compton Mackenzie, the Scottish Nationalist candidate, has been elected rector of Glasgow University. Mr. Mackenzie is an author.

Mr M. Kennedy, manager of the Wellington Gas Works, who has been visiting Greymouth, returned to Wellington to-day.

Miss Eileen Baldwin and Messrs F. N. Baldwin and R. Bunt, .who have been visiting the North Island, returned to Greymouth by yesterday’s express.

Guests at Revington’s include: — Mr and Mrs C. A. Cameron (Lyttelton)’, Messrs W. Modrinick (New Plymouth), S. Angel (Dunedin), A. Anderson (Christchurch), F. Silver (Wellington).

The death is announced from Timaru of John Lishman Potter, in his ninetyeighth year. He was the last survivor of the Eureka stockade fight of 1854, in which he served under Peter Lalor, the rebel leader. He afterwards took part in the Gabriel’s Gully gold rush.—Press Assn.

The funeral of the late Mr John McCarthy took place yesterday morning at the Karoro. Cemetery. Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church was celebrated by Rev. Father Gregory, who also conducted the services at the graveside. There was a large attendance, including many members of the Star of the West Druids’ Lodge.

The death, as announced of Mr. Alfred Eckhold, aged 46, a former Otago Rugby half-back and All Black back, and a well-known referee. Mr. Eckhold played for New Zealand in 1907 and for the South. Island in 1907 and 1908. At cricket he also represented Otago. Later he became known as one of the best referees in New Zealand. He controlled the Test between New Zealand and New South Wales, at Dunedin, in 1923, and was in charge of four different Ranfurly Shield matches.—Press Assn.

The death took place at the Greymouth Hospital yesterday morning, after a lengthy illness, of Mr. Walter James, aged 76 years. The late Mr. James, who was not married, had resided in Ahaura for the last 56 years, and prior to that at Nelson Creek, following the occupation of a gold-miner at both places. He was born in Launceston, Tasmania, and came to the Dominion with his parents at an early age, his father, the late Mr. Jacob James owning the first brewery in Greymouth. He is survived by one sister, Mrs John Kyle, Masterton. The funeral will take place at the Ahaura Cemetery to-morrow afternoon, at 2 p.m.
