Steps towards the relief of unemployment among nurses were taken today when the conference of the New Zealand Trained Nurses Association now sitting in Wellington, adopted the recommendations of a special committee which had been set up to go into the question. The recommendatons were as follow: — That hospital boards be asked to consider a district nursing service for their patients, this service to be rendered by a qualified district sister assisted by fourth year nurses. That the ratio of trained nurses to pupils in hospitals be increased with a view to greater economy and efficiency of service. That a special effort be made to obtain increasing employment of trained nurses in the industrial world. That the hourly private nursing scheme be further extended. That trained nurses be encouraged to seek mental hospital service. The question of a reduction in private nurses’ fees was discussed at length, and it was decided that fees should remain as at present, nurses retaining the right to make a reduction in any special case. It was decided to hold the next annual conference at Dunedin in 1932. Miss Young, Otago, was elected Dominion President. >
