CHILD MARRIAGES

Thousands of Mohammedans in Indi®. to-day observed Hartal (Day of Mourning) as a protest against the passing of the Child Marriage Bill, which prohibits the marriage of Indian girls under fourteen. Previously there was no limit, and it was quite common to see marriages of girls of ten years. Appeals to the Viceroy to prevent the Bill becoming law in April next, on the ground that the measure would interfere with the rights of Moslems and the basis of Islamic law, proved fruitless. Mohammedan shops closed in the ■chief Indian cities.".'ln Calcutta, the Europeans have difficulty in securing' food supplies.' , .
