BANK CLERK CHARGED
ALLEGED THEFT OF MONEY. — . ' . SYDNEY, November 15., Norman Edgar Mcßae, - cl.prk,.. 28, was charged at the.-Central’ Polipe Court yesterday with having stolen £5OO, while employed as a clerk at the English,. Scottish and Australian Bank,. Oxford. Street branch. Detective-sergeant Miller ..said that wflien lie informed defendant- that, a check of the bank books disclosed a shortage ,of £5OO in the cash, Mcßae said: “The pply idea I have of the loss 'is that it was taken’ over the counter by. an outsider.”’ Asked' whether lie had‘been attending the races, defendant replied; “No,” Witness informed

He and Walker then went to : the races, and during the afternoon deferidarit lost .£soo' in bets. .. He brought hack, the £lOO. and on the following Monday morning put it back air tho cash at the bank. He, had hot; previously taken any money from, the bank, nor was any other bank official implicated in his shortage. Mr, Niland, who appeared for the de-
fence, said defendant had been on the staff of the bank for 14 years and bore an excellent character. He believed that full restitution of the amount had been made to hte- bank. The magistrate, in committing the defendant for trial at the next Quarter Sessions, said that in view of Mr. Niland’s statement regarding restitution, he would reduce bail from £5OO to £lOO.
