FIGHT IN BATHROOM

NEGRO INTRUDER CAPTURED. Attracted by lights and the sounds of combat, police officers entered the bathroom of a house at Drummoyne, Sydney, early one morning recently, and saw an extraordinary scene. A terrified negro, coatless and without his boots, was crouched against the wall of the bathroom; two angry householders, whose pyjama clothing showed evidence of a fierce struggle, were standing over him, threatening him with dire penalties if he moved; and, to give point to the argument, one of the householders was pressing a large pair of horse-clippers against the negro’s chest, in the manner of a spear. The two Arthur Ryau and Leo Bradshaw, told the police that they had been wakened by peculiar sounds in a bedroom. On getting up to investigate they found the negro in the bathroom, attempting to hide under the bath. They closed, with him and after a struggle, were able to overpower him. The negro told the police that he was a seaman from one of the oversea vessels in the harbour, but could give no explanation of what he had been doing in the house. His coat and boots were found outside the premises. He was taken to the Balmain police station and was charged with being in enclosed premises, with intent to steal.
