JUBILEE COMMEMORATION.
(Per Press Association.)
TIMARU, November 28.
The services for the celebrating of the Golden Jubilee of the Convent of the Sacred Heart at Timaru, held toc were attended by the leaders of the Roman .Catholic Church in New Zealand, and in addition by a large number of priests.from all parts of the Dominion. There are several of those to-day present who had attended the ceremony of the laying of the Convent’s foundation fifty years ago, and notably Archbishop .Redwood, of Wellington, who performed that ceremony.
A striking tribute was paid to the great work which the Sacred Heart Nuns have accomplished. At the opening of their convent there were fiftypupils, but to-day the roll numbered two hundred and thirty. Pontifical High Mass was celebrated in the morning, Bishop Brodie, of Christchurch, being the celebrant. A stirring address was delivered by Archbishop Redwood. In the afternoon a big open-air function was held by the Convent Old Girls’ Association, at which commemorative medals were presented to the ladies who had been present at the laying of the foundation stone. lii the evening at the Sacred Heart School, the Old Girls and the St. Anne’s Guild made presentations to the Nuns, in recognition of the work being done at the Convent.
