SHEEP-STEALING.

HAMILTON, August 29. After three days’ hearing, Herbert Henry Ellis, aged 28, farmer, of Te Kuiti, was found guilty of stealing fifty-eight "sheep, belonging to William Gadsby. r A recommendation to mercy made on account of the fact tha sheep strayed on to his property, and he did not deliberately set out to steal them. i Sentence was postponed. GISBORNE SESSIONS. GISBORNE, August 29. Another collapse of a prosecution occurred at the Supreme Court ni the case of Joe Edwards, otherwise known as Paorate Arawhariki, charged with incest. The first witness, the daughter of the prisoner, against whom the offence was allegedly committed, pi oved so contradictory in her testimony that Judge MacGregor ordered the jury to bring in a verdict of not guilty. This was done, and the prisoner was discharged. j , William Henry Glye, on two charges of carnal knowledge, was found guilty, and was remanded for sentence. GISBORNE, August 30.
At the Supreme Court, Henry Mackay, 36, described by the Judge as a sexual pervert and a menace to society, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for indecently assaulting a boy. Another prisoner, William Henry Gleye, characterised by the Judge as a dangerous man, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for carnal knowledge. Frederick James Harvey was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment, and Hotene Rehutai to five years’ imprisonment, on charges of incest. Ani Tarapa, 23, a Maori woman with five young children, who . pleaded guilty to two charges of arson, was ordered to come up for sentence when called on.
Rawiri Wharehunga aid Taiera Rokai, breaking and entering the Tuaroa Trading Coy’s store, pleaded guilty. The former was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, and the latter 18 months’ reformative detention.
