Mr and Mrs H. Paletliorpe arrived from Christchurch yesterday, on holiday visit to Greymouth.

The death is announced from Sydney of a New Zealander, Boyce Bowden He was for several years a- membe the Sydney “Sun” staff.

Mr T Harris, who was on the P. and T staff'at. Greymouth ten years ago, is on a eyeling tour trom Chrlstchurcn. He arrived In Greymouth this morning from Westport.

A London cablegram announced the death of Sir Ernest Satow Jg of 86 years. -He was British Minister in various parts of the world and . particularly in the Far East. H several books on Japan.

The wedding took place at the Presbvterian Church, Kokatahi, on Monday, of Mr. Edward W. Mills, eldest son of Mr. William Mills, of Humphreys, to Annie, fourth daughter of the late Mr. Ritchie and Mrs. W. Rowe, of Dillmanstown. The Rev. J. W. Hayward officiated. The bride, who looked charming in a beige jumper suit with hat and shoes to tone, and carried a beautiful bouquet, was given away by her stepfather, Mr. W. Rowe. Miss Nellie Louden was bridesmaid, wearing a pink and green crepe-de-chine dress, with hat to match, and carrying a pretty bouquet. Mr. John Ritchie (brother of the bride) was best man. The church had been prettily decorated by friends of the bride.

Mr M. B. Essen, second assistant secretary of .the P. and T. Department, who has been appointed New Zealand representative in London on the Imperial Communications Advisory Committee left by the Mataroa to-day.-Yes-terday, he was farewelled by a large gathering of officers of all branches at which the Postmaster-General presented him with a wallet of sovereigns, subscribed all over the Dominion. He paid a very high tribute to Mr Essen’s services. Mr J. Robertson, acting secretary and Mr A. Gibbs, Chief Telegraph Engineer, also eulogised Mr Essen, and conveyed to him the best wishes of the service. Mr Essen, who has been connected with the service for 26 years, having started as a telegraphist, expressed his thanks, and paid a high tribute to the engineering side of the service. He said that the engineers were working quietly all the time, and very little became known of their activities, and perhaps they did not get the full credit for them. — Press Assn.
