AUSTRALIA DEFEATS OTAGO

(Per Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, July 31. The ground was heavy for the hockey game between Australia and Otago here to-day. The struggle in which both sides played good, fast hockey, resulted in a win for the visitors by two goals to nil. For the greater part of the first spell, play was fairly even. Silver in the front row was in dashing form and Ireland and Hanning were playing an excellent defensive game. The first score was easy, the ball coming in softly to evade the goalie’s kick, and rolling in. Infringements were frequent on both sides, as Otago speeded up in an effort to equalise. O’Connor was playing a wonderful game in Australia’s goal saving time and again, when the home side pressed. Shortly after half time, Australia made a determined rush which culminated in a shot by Stephens, which the Otago goalie could not stop. For the remainder of the game Otago tried hard to catch up, and came to grips with the visitors in the circle on many occasions. The forwards however were not shooting well, and all attempts on the goal were topped by O’Connor. The game ended with the home side attacking. LOCAL GAMES. >
