Matheson, Manager of the Empire Express Company, died at the hospital, as the result of being struck by a motor-car iu the city last evening. ALLEGED BURGLARY. WELLINGTON, August 1. Francis Clark, alias Gifford, 37, labourer, was remanded to-day to Wednesday, on charges of burglary at six houses, affecting goods valued at £167 Is 6d. The police intiqiated that there would be further changes. LONELY DEATH TAIHAPE, July 31. The body of a man, Edward Leigh, aged 41, was found in a wool-shed of an untenanted farm, near Taihape, on Tuesday evening. He was a heavy drinker. An empty methylated spirits bottle was close by. He died from exposure, and had been dead about two days. He has relatives at Gisborne and on the Coast. KILLING PROTECTED GAME. ELTHAM, July 30. Charged at the Eltham Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M., with killing protected game (pigeon) and shooting imported game (grey duck) within the Egmont National Park, a woodsplitter named 1. H. D. Ives was fined £25 on the first charge, and convicted on the second charge. He was fined £5O with costs 10s on the third charge. William Duggan, for killing pigeons at Awatuna, was fined £2O.

RADIO EXHIBITION. DUNEDIN, July 31

The Otago Radio Exhibition was opened this afternoon by Mayor R. S. Black, before an attendance of about 400. Following Mr Black’s remarks, a message from the Postmaster General and Minister of Railways at Wellington was received over the landline and relayed by 4YA. The Exhibition is held under the auspices of the Otago Amateur Radio Association, and comprises' a comprehensive display of the latest development and many novel features. The Broadcasting Company temporarily installed a studio on the stage, and will broadcast from the exhibition during its progress.

ATTACKS ON WOMEN. WELLINGTON, July 31

William Edward Francis, ) the young man who assaulted and robbed a young woman passing through the ’technical School grounds on her way home on Saturday night, appeared before Mr Page S.M - ., and pleaded guilty to this and charges in respect to two other women.

Nothing appeared in the evidence to show any motive other than robbery. Accused apparently ran up from behind the woman, using the path through the Technical Grounds, which forms a short cut. After the Saturday night robbery a Police Sergeant went to the path, and accused came along and was arrested with the articles in his possession.

CHARITABLE BEQUESTS AUCKLAND, July 31.

Under the will the late Mrs. L. A. Duffas, whose death occurred on Tuesday, the following institutions will benefit: Church of England', Orphans Home, Papatoetoe; Door of Hope, Auckland; Jubilee Institute for the Blind, Salvation Army, Leslie Presbyterian Orphanage (Reniuera, Auckland), Presbyterian Social Service Association, and the Manurewa Children’s Home, each to receive £lOOO. The Auckland Sailors’ Home, and Richmond Road Children’s Home each received £5OO. The residue of the estate is left to Mr. A. Body, in trust for hospitals in the Bay of Islands County.

MARRIED WOMAN’S DEATH PALMERSTON N., August 1

An inquest was held this mornin*.' in connection with the death of Eileen Mclnnes, married, of Otaki, who died in hospital on July 24. The evidence of the - Superintendent of the hospital was to the effect that deceased told him she had used an instrument upon herself to achieve a certain result, 'lhe cause of death was septicaemia and peritonitis, following an illegal operation. , Detective Russell stated that deceased, when interviewed, admitted performing an illegal operation on herself, but refused to divulge other information. The verdict was in accordance with the medical evidence.

CANVASSER’S FRAUDS. INVERCARGILL, July 31

Percy Harry Ellis, alias Cowan, alias Millar, who was recently convicted and -sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on three charges of false pretences, by representing that he was the representative of the N.Z. Pictorial News, and Government Publicitv Department, again appeared in the Police Court this morning, when thirteen similar charges were preferred against him. He pleaded guilty to all of them. Three had occurred at Wyndham, three at Mataura, two at Bluff, and one each at Riverton, Winton, Otorohanga, and Fairlie. He was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on each of the local charges, the sentences to be concurrent. Detective Sergeant Hewitt, who appeared for the police asked that accused be remanded to appear at Timaru on August 6, to answer a charge from Fairlie, and also an Otorhanga charge. This request was granted.

DRUNKEN DRIVER. WELLINGTON, August 1. In consequence of a collision on the Hutt Road, in which a cyclist, C. _E. Warr, was seriously injured, Nathaniel John Reid, salesman, 41, was charged in the S.M. Court with causing bodily injury while driving in a state of intoxication. Medical evidence was that Warr was severely hurt and would be incapacitated for six months, and possibly suffer shortness in a leg, which was broken. ' A witness said that he saw accused driving erratically, swerve to the wrong side, and hit the cyclist. He saw accused after the accident, and considered he was in liquor and unfit to drive.

Counsel’s version, for the accused, was that the day was wet and windy. Cigarette ash flew in Reid’s eye and temporarily blinded him. The car did not belong to him, and he could not get bail. Eventually, accused decided to plead guilty rather than wait three months for trial, and was committed for sentence.
