TRACK AND STABLE NOTES From to-day Limerick will be classed as a six-year-old gelding, In the event of Limerick and Paquito shaping well in Sydney, F. D. Jones will probably take the pair to Melbourne, where the latter claims an engagement in the Melbourne Cup. Mount Boa, the five-year-old Novice Handicap winner .at Timaru, is trained at Waimate by mentor T. Hobbs. Last season Nukumai won the Jumpers’ Flat and G.N. Hurdles. He is engaged in the same double this year at the National meeting. Diamond Jack is a promising sort over country, as he jumps well and has a good deal of pace. It is stated that prior to her success at Canterbury Park,, Sydney, experts were of the opinion that Oratrix was not quite ready to give of her best. Mr. J. B. Gaisford’s bay colt Arikinui, by Chief' Ruler —Clemisia, was added to the team of F. D. Jones, for a

Sydney trip at the eleventh hour. Fordell trainer, F. Tilley, has his team in steady work, and hopes to < have Glenartney and Laughing Prince ready for the Wanganui J.C. Spring meeting; During the incoming season the Avondale Jockey Club will distribute the sum of £10,400 in stakes, a de. crease of £1,670, as compared with the closing turf term. It is reported from a reliable source that the Waimate Hunt Club may hold , its postponed meeting on a date following the Grand National fixture next month. The distance attached to the Avondale Cup has been reduced from a mile and a-half to a mile and a-quar-ter. During the five seasons Paper Money’s stock have been on the turf they have won over 77,000 sovs. in stakes. This amount does not include stakes won in Australia prior to the present season. Young Thurnham was very'lame in front when leaving the course on Tuesand his prospects of fulfilling engagements on the trip do mot look hopeful. The name of Just an Idea is to be i,

claimed for a filly by Chief Ruler Gaiety Girl, who is displaying galloping ability for Wanganui trainer MJ Gardner. The stakes for the Avondale Cup have been reduced from £1,200 to £9OO, and the winner will now receive £6OO, second £2OO and third £lOO, previous place money. • / More than 30 Maoriland horses won races in Sydney this season and nearly £30,000 in - totalled stake money. South-trained Paris ran an improving race in his batten engagement at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting. Perle de Leon is acquitting himself satisfactorily in his work at Takapau, and all going well with him he will be at the National fixture. His last win was in the Waipukurau Cup at the Easter meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club, over twelve months ago. Perle de Leon had a couple of races over hurdles at Napier Park last month, and ran third at his second start.

When Crown Area was sold at a high price it was surmised that W. Booth bought him for a patron of his stable. It was not so, the Rosehill trainer purchasing the big gelding on his own behalf. The price paid was substantial, which augurs well for Crown Area’s future, his new .owner being too good a judge to chance his money on anything that did not appear a payable proposition. 9 Peter Etawah, the full-brother to Peterwah, is still winning races in the United States, and the latest files to hand give particulars of his racing at Matinee meetings. He won the special Free-for-All Trot in two straight heats in 2.143 and 2.12. He will probably do much faster time when raced on the Grand Circuit.

From all parts of New Zealand and with no uncertain voice there was a big demand last week in unofficial circles for Glendowie in the Grand National Steeplechase. It seems pertinent to ask (says “Vedette”), why this sudden desire to support a horse who has performed in ignominious fashion throughout the season. He is not pitch-forked into the big steeplechase by any means, and if he has any chance of winning the National he must have improved very considerably since taking the country air. However, it is sufficient to say that he has now advanced to favouritism for the cross-country blue riband. The next thing will be to see whether he shows the improvement his banking forecasts.

When the Greymouth Trotting Club holds its meeting on .October 26 and 28, the Auckland meeting will be conducted concurrently, while on the Monday, which is Labour Day, there will be trotting meetings at Whangarei and Oamaru. It is unfortunate that so many clubs should race on the same, day. Last year Greymouth, Oamaru and Northland raced on Labour Day, but the Auckland fixture was a week earlier. Now that the Auckland meeting clashes with those of the South Island Clubs it may have a detrimental effect upon patronage of the Greymouth meeting by trainers. Last year D. Warren, J. J. Kennerley, F. G. Holmes, J. Bryce and W. J. Tomkinson were able to race some of their team at Auckland and later take part in the Greymouth or Oamaru meetings. With all the meetings on the same day it is natural to expect that these reinsmen will go to Auckland and on to Whangarei, owing to the big money on offer. It is quite possible that some of them will be represented at the South Island meetings but many trainers do not like leaving their horses in charge of others, especially when so much travelling is to be done. At the annual meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club last evening it was decided to donate £lOO to the earthquake relief fund, the President remarking that he was sorry that their finances would not permit them to make it £lOOO.
