HOKITIKA NOTES

O (Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, June 26. At the Supreme Court yesterday, almost the whole day was occupied with the suit Wm. Jeffries v. J. Cron, ine case was not concluded at the time of the evening adjournment. Witnesses had been heard, but His Honor had to hear legal argument. The case has created much interest, particularly among those interested in the cattle trade. The lad, Wm. G. Muir, who. had pleaded guilty in the Lower Court to passing two valueless cheques for £25 and procuring goods and money from W. McKay and Son, and the N.Z. Clothing Factory on April 18, was sentenced to two years’ probation, subject to him refunding the firms concerned the amount of £3B/17/7 and paying costs of Court £4/2/-. The sum of £B/6/11 found on him was to be used to this end. The Hokitika Ladies’ Hockey Club notched another victory on Wednes- i day afternoon, when they defeated the Runanga team by 3 goals to one, Misses 0. Stapleton, P. Thorn and M. Sumner scoring for Hokitika. A wedding was solemnised at St. John’s Church (Anglican), Rimu on Wednesday afternoon, by the Rev. J. Perkins, the contracting parties being Mr Bert Ellery, youngest son of Mrs Ellery, Black’s Point, Reefton, and Eileen, second daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Werner, of Dunollie. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a beautifully embroidered nigger brown frock, with hat and shoes to match, and carried a prayer book, the gift of Dlrs Peake, of Hokitika. She was attended by Mrs Tom McCormack (aunt), as matron of honour, while Mr Peake performed the duties of best man. A reception was afterwards held at Mrs McCormack’s residence. There appears to be a sort of “general post” with the butchers of the district, no less than three firms changing hands within the next week.
