RACING FIXTURES. July 26, 28—Gisborne Racing Club. July 26 —Waimate Hunt Club. July 27—Poverty Bay Trotting Club. August 4—Poverty Bay Hunt Club. August 14, 16, 18—Canterbury J.C. August 11, 15 and 17—Metropolitan Trotting Club. RACING NEWS AND NOTES. (By “Arlington.”) There will be racing to-morrow at Gisborne and Waimate. Kilbird was scratched for all engagements at the C.J.C. Grand National Meeting at 11.45 a.m. yesterday. General Petain, Penury Rose and Avispado are a useful Grand National trio. There’s a horse called White Hope in the principal flat race at Gisborne to-morrow. Golden Grape should run well al Waimate. Mainspring should see a short price in the Hunters’ Plate at Waimate. Backed and beaten—Roniform on Saturday last. General Raven dominates the opposition in the Gisborne Steeplechase. Oak Rose will carry a lot of money, but is hardly in the same street as the top-weight over three miles. Cartoon will carry the confidence of his connections at Waimate. That the result of the Iladlow Hunters’ Hurdles at South Canterbury was regarded as very open found evidence in the betting, as there was only a few pounds difference on the machine as between Silk Rein, Sherlock, Roniform and Cartoon. After Mainspring, Sherlock and Roniform had set a solid pace for over a mile, Cartoon and Silk Rein put in their claims, and for a few strides it looked as if the former would prevail. Once over the last jump Silk Rein put in a brilliant run, and soon having Cartoon’s measure, won comfortably by two lengths. A great set-to between Cartoon and Mainspring for second money ended in favour of the former by a neck. Phil May was made a good favourite for the Pareora Hurdles Steeplechase on Saturday, and only for being asked Io cover a lot of extra ground would have won. He was in front in the first half of the journey, but then a • faulty jump caused him to give place to Rhoboro and Prudent Boy. Six furlongs from home Rhoboro, Prudent Boy, Phil May and Happy Mac were the only ones with chances, and when I'hil May closed on Rhoboro at the entrance to the straight, matters looked easy for him. At this stage the favourite lost half a dozen lengths by running out. He was with Rhoboro at the last obstacle, but was tiring badly. In an interesting finish Rhoboro stayed on the better and scored by a length. The winner is one of P. T. Hogan’s many charges, and it was his clever jumping that stood to him. Message Boy gave a poor exhibition, while Miss Ivanoff and Tainui 11. met with mishaps. Agnola and Blazes were the only two of the nine starters in the Levels Hack Handicap at South Canterbury supported with any spirit. Always handily placed, Agnola had the result in safe keeping a long way from home, and scored comfortably by two lengths from Clontarf. Blazes had every chance, but after being prominent at the home turn could not foot it with Agnola. Though carrying 91b. extra, as a result of his earlier win, Rhoboro was made a slightly better favourite than Malincourt for the Teschemaker Memorial Hunt Cup Steeplechase. Taking charge early, Golden Grape acted as pilot all through the first two miles, with Tainui 11. and Malincourt handy. Racing along the back stretch for ttie last time, Rhoboro improved his position, and only Golden Grape headed him as the home straight was entered. Golden Grape put up a game effort, but he had no ciiance with Rhoboro, who finished full of running. Sir Medallist, Cremona, Tainui 11. and Obeina, all made mistakes. Malinccurt j umped really well, but was beaten a long way from home. A trio of Winter Cup candidates, Carmine, Fabrinade and Dame Straitlace, were included in the field for tiie Claremont Welter at South Canterbury. After holding a position behind Fabrinade for three-parts of the journey, Carmine had him well beaten over the last furlong. The race should do All Red’s son a lot of good, in view of his Riccarton engagements. Murihaupo, Ballymena, Urgency and Zaragoza will leave for Sydney tomorrow in charge of their trainer, F. D. Jones. -Mr. G. D. Greenwood was a passenger by the Manuka for Sydney on Friday last. He will remain in Australia till after the A.J.C. Spring meeting. Arch Salute changed hands recently and is now trained by A. J. Shearsby at Awapuni. , Rapine, King’s Trumpeter, Grotesque, Bathos, Giggle and Palelight felt Wellington for bydnoy on Friday last, in harge of J. 11. Jefferd. Machine Brick, winner of the last

Sydney Thousand, may be brought to

New Zealand in the new season. At the trotting meeting held at Epping (N.SAV.) on June 28, Machine Brick was in good form and notched two seconds, being unlucky in one instance not to have won. He was conceding, big starts in both events, and ip Um I lying Handicap ho was beaten a necu by Iron Epic, to whom lie was giving Bsecs. In this event he covered the nine furlongs at a rate of speed of slightly under 2.13 on a heavy track. Tipperary, an aged gelding, has been taken in hand by Ben Jarden. Box beat is said to be doing well since going into N. Price’s stable, and tiie disappointing Australian gelding may return some of his purchase money next season.

L. Eerkett will have a good team to represent him at Poverty Bay, including Alicel, Caterpillar and Kotiro. The [ormer is very Jit and should more than pay expenses. Kanin s acceptance for the Grand National Steeplechase was received about a quarter of an hour after the closing time on Friday night. The nomination of Silk liein for some of the minor events at the meeting could not be taken for a similar reason. Ithoboro, who won both the hunters' steeplechase at South Canterbury, is said to lie a rare cut of a hunter, up to any weight, while he is a good jumper and slays well. He is by the Clanranald horse, Cannie Chief, his dam, Noeleen, being by Waterloo, an Auckland ored horse by Cuirassier from Hune, by Capea-Pie from Raupo, by Diomede from Waimea. Grim Joke had his preparation interrupted recently owing to a poisoned leg. He is again in work, however, but a bit backward. D. Bennett has taken Vera Logan to Gisborne to compete at lhe Poverty Bay T.C’s meeting. The pacing gelding Progress and the trotter Ohapi are recent additions to D. Bennett’s stable. Reliance, Wire, Jimmy Richmond, and Jean Audubon will represent J. Bryce at the Poverty Bay meeting. Crucelle has broken down, and will be retired to the stud. It is reported that 1000 guineas were offered Io Mr. J. B. Gaisford for First B<>rn after the Tliurnham gelding had

won the Vittoria Hurdles on the first day at Wellington. Apparently two good judges were well met, the wouldbe buyer and Mr. Gaisford, for in the next two days of the meeting the gelding won 1270 sovs.

Ahuriri is amiss, having contracted pleurisy.
