TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE AT SEA
PETROL CARGO BLOWN UP. LONDON, April 30. The Russian oil tank steamer Kometa, of 2005 tons, carrying petrol from Constantinople to Rouen, exploded at sea 20 miles from Algiers on Sunday. She sank immediately. Fifteen of the persons on board, including the captain's wife, were saved by English, German, and French shipping. It is feared that 15 lost their lives. Most of the crew who were in the forecastle had to pass through the fire in order to get to the boats. One boat was launched in which were the mat 3 and the captain's wife. The oil had now spread'all round the ship, and clung to the boats as they left hei side. The crews had to fight fire and water at the same time, and one of the boats capsized. Meanwhile the shrieks of those who were still on deck alternated with the explosions of the cargo. Two of the rescued men are out of their minds.
