IS COALITION COMING?

AUCKLAND OPPOSITIONISTS SIGNIFICANT REMARKS.

ONLY A PAPER WALL BETWEEN IT.

[by TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL TO THE STAR.] WELLINGTON, This Day. It is significant,* in view of the coalition ideas generally current, that Mr. F. Mander, Opposition M.P. for Marsden, should have made the fallowing remarks at a banquet in honor of the Prime Minister at Whangarei, on Monday night. Referring ,to the Hon. T. Mackenzie’s speech, he said;- . “Nearly everything,” he said, “I can pretty .well agree to if ho can only get his colleagues to agree with him, Ido no think it would be hard to come a little closer together and form a coalition that would carry on the Gcvernment of the country for a long time. That is the most sensible thing that can take place. After all there was only a paper wall between many of the followers of both sides of the „House and they should tear down that wall and kick it away. Thei'e are extremists on both sides. The moderate sensible men should gravitate a little closer together. Politics to-day are in a very difficult position. Ido not care what Government is in power they will have very great difficulties to face and it will take all the commonsense of the best men in Parliament to carry on a Government in this country at this time.” MODERATES SHOULD GRAVITATE TOGETHER. “It Behoves the moderate commonsense men of the country to gravitate together and bring about a better state of things than exists at present. Unfortunately with some, party interests are more important than the interests of the country, I go for principles rather than men and I hope at next election that the hon. gentle.man and some of his more sensible friends will come over and help us to govern well. I think we ought to come together and work in the interests of this country. I wisli the hon gentleman all sorts of luck as long as he keeps on the right track and I will support him whenever I think he is on the right track.”

The Prime Minister interjected: “On a want of confidence motion ?” Mr. Slander : “No ; not on a want of confidence motion.”' (Laughter).
