GREY SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of this committee was held last night at which there were present Mr. A. C. Russell (Chairman), R. C. Forsyth, R. Williams, F. Barrowman, W. J. Johnson, W. Earl and F. W. Keddell (hon. sec.) HEADMASTER'S REPORT.

Mr. A.darhs reported as follows : "Primary Department.—The average roll number was 255.5 boys and 256.0 girls; total 511.5. The average attendance was 225.0 boys and 221.2 girls, total 446.2. The average number of absentees was 65.3. "Secondary Department. —The average number on roll was 21.0 boys and 19.7 girls, total 40.7. The average attendance was 37.7 boys and 18.0 girls; total 35.7. The average number of absentees was 5.

"Blaketown. —The average roll number was 42.7 boys and 46.7 girls ; total 89.4. The average attendance was 37.4 boys and 40..6 girls ; total 78. The average number of absentees was .11.4. "Miscellaneous. — Miss Robinson was absent through illness on the 13th. Scripture lessons were given-as follows • —At Greymouth by Mr. Kelham on the Ist; Rev. Stewart on the Bth ; Adjutant McAuley on the 22nd; the Yen. Archdeacon York on the 29th. Blaketown —by Mr. Kelham on the 22nd and 29th." BLAKETOWN SCHOOL.

The St-certary of the Blaketown Social Committee wrote asking for a subsidy on the funds raised during the,winter towards the purchase of a piano for the school. He also asked the Committee to attend the prize giving on Saturday the 16th inst. The Chairman moved that the application for a subsidy be recommended to the Board. Mr. Barrowman seconded.— Carried. It was decided that as many members as could should attend the prize distribution next Saturday. ATTENDANCE PRIZES. Mr Barrowman mentioned the case of a hoy who had not missed an attendance at S'hool for five years, and he moved that certificates be issued to all pupils who were regular in their attendance. Mr Earl seconded. —Carried. THE PICNIC. The Secretary said the time had arrived to consider the annual picnic, and suggested that the Very Rev. Dean Carew be consulted. Mr Forsyth moved that the Secretary interview the Dean with a view of their undertaking a canvass of the town. Mr Williams seconded. —Carried. THE TEACHING STAFF. Miss Skoglund wrote', asking for a month's holiday on account of ill-health. Mr Keddell moved that the application be recommended to the Board, provided a relieving teacher is appointed in her piace. Seconded by the Chairman and carried. It was also decided to ask the Education Board to call applications for the position on the staff of the Blaketown School, rendered vacant by Mr Moriarty j having been appointed to the Moana ] School. , The headmaster was asked to supply a list of the holidays the teachers had received during the vear. SCHOOL REQUISITES. The Visiting Committee reported as follows : "As the Visiting Committee for the month we visited the Greymouth and Blaketown schools, and beg to report as follows : "Greymouth school. —A pane of glass v: one of the windows in the Secondary Department room requires replacing. The taps in the lavatory are still in an un- j satisfactory condition Thi'se should be put in order to prevent waste of water, j and to allow of the younger scholars using them. i ''Blaketown School. —The back door on J the south side is very much broken and should be repaired. The blackboards are split and twisted and should be replaced. Owing to being' twisted they are apt to slip off the easel pegs and strike some of the children in falling. The catch on the door of the infant room requires seeing to, and some of the backs of the seats want fastening," On the motion of Mr Forsyth, seconded by Mr Earl, the secretary was directed to procure and supply the above items, and have the repairs effected, i
