Born at Calcutta, India, on January 11th, 1346. he arrived in New Zealand in August, 1852, was educated ai Christ's . College Grammar i School, C"h ristch lirc'h', . and admitted as barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court in May, 1867; he was appointed a notary public in 1888.'. Sir Arthur Guinness has practised his profession at Greymouth from December, 1867, to date. He was elected a member of the Westland Provincial Council in 1874', and continued as. member until the abolition of the provinces in, 1876. He was elected a member ot the Grey County Council in 1876, he was also elected chairman at the first and every subsequent meeting for nine years. He ceased to be a member of the County Council in 1890. He was elected a member of the Greymouth Borough Council in 1888, and held the seat for one year. He was returned to Parliament on July 22nd, 1884, as member for Grey, and has sat continuously for that seat till the present time. Appointed a member of the Greymouth Harbour Board in 1884, he has held that position ever since, except for two years, 1887 and 1889, when Sir H. A. Atkinson's Government removed all representative members and appointed Government officials on the Board. Sir Arthur was elected Chairman of Committees of the House of Representatives on July 13th, 1893, he was elected at the opening of each Parliament until he was appointed Speaker on June 29th, 1903, and has been re-elected to that office in 1906 and 1909. He was appointed a governor of the Greymouth District High School in 1892, and has been re-appointed to that nosition ever since. He was Cap-, tain of the Westland Cricket Eleven from 1876 to 1888. j

WESTLAND. Thomas Edward Youd Seddon is the second son of Richard John Seddon, P.C, L.L.D., and Louise Jane Seddon, daughter of Captain Spotswood, of Victoria, Australia, was horn in Kumara, Westland, in 'IBB4. He was educated at the State School. Kumara, Terrace School, Wellington, Wellington College and Victoria College. Both at school and university he showed a keenness for sport, at Wellington College specialising in sprint events. He finally won the school championship, taking the coveted old boys' challenge cup and the Ranfurly cup ior hut die and jumping events. He also rel<: esented his college for three years at football, and was , also College Prefect, Going on to Victoria College he took up n law course and entered the office of Messrs Findlay, Dalziel and Co. On five occasions he represented Victoria College in the Inter-University tournaments, one year holding the 100 yards championship. He entered the House in 1906 at the age ol 22, representing Westhmd. On entering the House, he moved the Address-in-Eeply. During his Parliamentary career 1-0 has identified himself with mining matters, and was chiefly responsible by his persistent agitation for the setting up of the Commission to look into the timber industry.

BULLER. James Colvin was elected Mayor of Westport in 1894 and has represented Buller in Parliament for 12 years. He was born in County Donegal, Ireland, in 1884, and was educated at the National school in his native town. When seventeen years of age he left for the colonies and landed in Melbourne in 1861. For seme time he was mining at Cresswick Creek and Daylesford. In 1860 he came t) Otago and "went to the Dunstan, and later to the Wakatipu. From there he went to Invercargill, where he followed various pursuits. A year later he went to the Wakamarina rush and there opened a store, From there he went to Hokitika and commenced business as a storekeeper at Waimea. When the Grey rush in he started business in the Grey Valley. In 1867 when gold was discovered in the Buller he went to AddirHtt's Flat, and in 1872 he entered business in Westport, Mr Colvin has taken a keen interest in local politics. In 1885 he was elected to the Buller County Council and served six years on that body. He 1 was chairman of the Westport Harbour Board in 1890, and occupied a seat on the Nolson Education Board. In 1896 Mr Colvin contested the Buller seat in the House of Representatives against Mr P. J. O'Regan. In Parliament he has been a Government Whin, and for several sessions was Chairman of Committees,

OAMAKU. Mr Ernest Page Lee, of the firm of Messrs Loe, Grave and Grave, was born at Teignmouth (England) in 1852. He received Ws education at Cheltenham and London, and at the age of 18 years was articled to a prominent firm of West of England solicitors. Mr Lee partly served bis articles with this firm, and adopting the usual custom finished off with the fitm's London agents. In 1885 he wn.:< admitted to the Supreme Court of England as a solicitor, and in 1886 he came to Now eZaland, settling •in Oamaru. Shortly .after his arrival here Mr Lee qualified as a barrister and solicitor. Aft">practising for two years he uecepted, when Mr Hislop became a member of the Clown, a managing clerkship with the firm of Messrs hislon and Creacrh, and remained in that position for eight years. Subsequently Mr Lep again entered into practice on his own account, but later Vjok Mr A, G. Grave as naitner. He has been a member of various sph'ooj committees, the Timaru High School Board, am] the Timaru Harbour Board. At last election he opposed Sir W. J. Steward, and ran to within 300 votes of him.
