THE GENERAL ELECTION.

TO-DAY'S POLLING

Business in connection with to-day's polling began early in Greymouth. Mi B. Harper is to be heartily congratulated on the splendid arrangements he had made and the persons he appointed to act as deputy returning officers, poll clerks, etc., who were all in their places before the opening hour. There was an almost entire absence of excitement in Greymouth, but the numbers of vehicles that were engaged in bringing voters to the poll all day showed that nothing was being neglected by the candidates and their respective friends in this respect. The polls close at 7 p.m. and the returns as they come to hand will be displayed in a window of the Star Office. In Westland, where the poll doses at 6 p.m., the utmost excitement prevails. fBY TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] IN DUNEDIN. Though the weather is still stormy the conditions are improving. Heavy licensing and electoral polls v are anticipated in the city and suburbs. IN TIMARU. TIMAIIU, This Day. The weather is fine for the election and all parties are working hard. Judging by the interest so far the poll will be very heavy. AT CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Brill.ant weather prevails for the election today. Voting proceeded steadily in all the districts during the morning, being specially heavy in Christchurch North, where a record poll is anticipated. Excitement runs high in this electorate, Messrs Hall and Isitt having kept the campaign interesting. There is more than usual feeling at Avon, where the personal element has been introduced into the fight between Messrs McCombs and Russell. In the other districts the campaigning has been very orderly and quiet. With regard to the Licensing Poll the Prohibitionists had a meeting of five thousand in Cathedral Square last night, but at nine o'clock a big contingent of rowdies took charge and the meeting had to be abandoned.
