In view of the recent controversv regarding luminous mutton, it may be iniprr\itin» to note that the Jewish Rabbi (R -'\\ J. A. T. Chadow.ski), sneaking with twenty-one years' experience in examining meal, says that tho phosphorescent "low ■ v.). mutton is common in England and Germany, as well as in New Zealand, with sheep that are fed near the sea. He accepted the theory that the luminosity is a manifest at ion of phosphorus, and akin in orb'in to (he glow r.een on fish. Mr Ghadowski advised that such mutton should not be hung, but eaten fresh as fish is. With the observance of thai caution he thinks the shiny mutton i.s ncr felly safe and wholesome. A new temperance organisation under the name of the Otago and Southland Temperance Alliance has been formed in Duncdin under the aegis of Mr William Thomson, orfaniser for "The Trade." While recognising the right of those who so desire to abstain from alcohols.' the Alliance also recognises the right for those who desire to use it in moderation. Other planks in the platform are to oppose "inhibition, ami to improve and raise the moral tone of "Tile Trade;" bv inquiry as to antecedents of every applicant for a license, and thorough supervision and influence to see that the law is observed. A man described by Chief Detective Herbert as a "professional fraud," who has lived since his arrival here from Singapore, some nine months ago, by victimising boarding-house keepers and others, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment at the Police Court.
