PREFERENTIAL TRADE. MELBOURNE. September 26. - Mr Deakin informed the Douses that he hoped to submit a statement on preferential trade before the close of the session. THE BRISBANE MURDER. BRISBANE. September 26. - Levaux was remanded. The grounds of the remand chiefly are that the polico have certain finger marks which should establish the identity of the murder,; also a knife with which the dwd was perpetrated. . SUICIDE CAUSED BY WORRY. PERTH, September 26. —At the inquest on do Winton, the housekeeper, Mr.s McLean, gave evidence, in which she stated deceased worried over his financial position at the club. They both agreed to die together. Deceased mixed morphia, and she drank her portion. Both destroyed papers prior to the deed, including a will by do Winton iii her favour. The Secretary to the Club stated the audit revealed a shortage in deceased's accounts of £527.
A NOTABLE DAY. SYDNEY, This Day.—The fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the first railway line in Australia—being the railway from Sydney to Parramatta—was celebrated to-day. Trains on the various suburban lines were decorated. The chief feature of the celebration is the exhibition of ancient and m-to-dato railway appliances, which was opened by the Governor during the afternoon. One exhibit shows the first train that ran, .side by side with a present-day Pullman express train, affording an object lesson of the progress made. The electrical branch of the display was the finest ever witnessed in Sydney. A USTRALLAN CYCLING. MELBOURNE. September 24. The 25-mile road championship nf Australasia was won by Hawlev. of Victoria, in 72min 53soc. J. j. Amst'a.nd Mertlions (Nov.' Zealand) were third and fourth. R. Amst competed. I'UI.'E FOOD HILL. MELBOURNE, Sept. 27.—The State Assembly, in debating the Pure Food Bill, desired to secure propel' supervision of the food supply! 1 It is intended to appoint a scientific board to determine what is the pure and what is the impure article.

The Attorney-General has given notice of a short measure granting immunity to witnesses against (lie prosecutors in the event of them making admissions which might incriminate themselves.
