TORONTO CONDITIONS

REVELATIONS FOR HOFSE (Aust and N.Z. Cable) Ottawa, February 28 Startling revelations of “sweatshop” conditions in Toronto factories were heard in the House of Commons during the industrial investigation. Mr A. W. Laver, Commissioner of Welfare in Toronto, swore that men with families were paid from Cl to £2 for a 60-hour week. The wages were so low that the men were forced to secure city relief. The Welfare Bureau was forced to place an official in the Courts to prevent the giving away of children by parents who were working but were paid too little to keep them. Rig stores and the needle trades were the worst offenders.
