WHEAT GROWING
INQUIRY IN AUSTRALIA HIGH COST OF BREAD (Aust. and N.Z. Cable) Sydney. March 1 At the wheat inquiry. Mr Ernest Field, president of the Farmers’ and Settlers’ Association, said that the farmers were supplying the cheapest wheat in the world to the Australian mills, yet the people wer#- paying more for their bread than any others. The cost of wheat lands bought by the Government for soldier settlement was too high. Mr. Arthur Aston, president of the Farmers’ Defence Association, gave evidence that in 1933 the position of the wheat farmers appeared almost hopeless. They lia.l been unable to reduce accumulated debts. The cost or farm labour had c-onie down, tlie rural workers having met tlie farmer at every turn. 'The inquiry was adjourned.
