TOURIST HIGHWAY

LINKING UP -MILFORD WITH LAKE DISTRICTS MILE-LONG TUNNEL ROAD (Per Press Association). Christchurch, February 27 The possibility of making Milford Sound a port of entry and departure for tourists visiting New Zealand by completing a tunnel road under the Gertrude Saddle and by linking up tbe sound and the lake districts with the Franz Josef and Fox Glacier resorts was mentioned in a tepephone interview today by the Hon. Adam Hamilton, Minister in charge of the Tourist Department. Tf the plan is feasible and not too expensive, the Minister hopes to attract tourists to the south by pro r viding them with a one-way route through the island, covering most of the more important scenic resorts, and enabling them to travel through the country without doubling on thoir tracks.

Tt is considered tlie lack of a connecting road is at present one of the main barriers to increased tourist traffic in the south.. Dir Hamilton said that if Milford Sound could be made an entry point for tourists, a great many more would undoubtedly be atraoted to the South Island.
